Slamdoors say Farewell to Lymington - 22nd May 2010

On Saturday 22 May a special “All Change” event was held to mark the last day of operation of the two CIG units that have operated the Lymington branch for the last few years. Service wise it was a normal Saturday timetable, but this was accompanied by events at stations along the line, including a continental Market and other stalls (including Solent branch’s sales stand) at Brockenhurst, memorabilia and souvenirs at Lymington Pier and into the evening a hog roast at Lymington Pier.

Both units were in service for the last day of operation, with British Railways Green 1498 running the morning services , its last turn being the 1159 Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier and 1214 return. BR Blue and Grey no 1497 then took over at 1229, a moment that saw both units in Brockenhurst station together for the last time. 1498 later went ECS to Bournemouth depot, while 1497 operated the rest of the day’s trains.

Despite the large numbers of people, timekeeping on the tight turnaround service was excellent, with all trains running to time. This was maintained right through until 1497 arrived at Brockenhurst with the very last train of the day at 2224. After a short wait, the doors slammed shut for the last time and 1497 set off for Bournemouth to a round of applause from the assembled crowd.
