6023 returns to Steam

Saturday 2 April was a very special day at Didcot Railway Centre, with the return to steam, in early BR blue, of ex-Great Western “King” class 4-6-0 no. 6023 King Edward II.

The splendid condition in which the loco was turned out, after a restoration programme lasting more than 20 years, was a tribute to all concerned, and KE2 was certainly the centre of attention. Large crowds flocked to witness this long-awaited day, boosted by the passengers by a railtour from Tyseley, the “Coronation Express”, double-headed by 4965 Rood Ashton Hall and 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, now elevated to near-legendary status following its exploits on the Great Western main line in 2010.

The Windsor and Maidenhead branch of RCTS was well represented, with Allan Machon and Brian Clark on duty in authentic uniform.
