Wadsley Bridge Footex's

The Sheffield suburban station at Wadsley Bridge on the GCR route from Sheffield Victoria to Penistone, Woodhead and Mancheater closed to regular passenger services on 15th June 1959. It did though continue to see use, mainly for footex's conveying away fans to the nearby Hillsborough football ground, home of Sheffield Wednesday.

The last use for a footex is understood to have been on the 8th January 1994 when a train conveying Nottingham Forest supporters was run.

Timetabled passenger services continued to run through Wadsley Bridge station until 14th May 1983 and it is understood some of these made special stops for the benefit of home supporters on match days.

Below are listed the dates and fixtures for which footex's ran to to/from Wadsley Bridge along with details of the trains. The list is in reverse chronological order and initially goes back to January 1970, This being the date regular passenger trains over the Woodhead route ceased. This is very much work in progress and any further details of trains would be very much welcomed.

Hillsborough was often used as a neutral ground for cup ties. Such matches would often result in several trains. However, only trains conveying suporters of one of the teams would operate to Wadsley Bridge, trains for supporters of the other team going to Sheffield (Midland) station with onward bus transfer to the ground.
