The former USSR used a system for identifying wagons which consisted of an eight-digit number painted in bold white characters on each side of every vehicle. It is surmised that the first three digits denoted the wagon type, and the remaining digits were a serial number. Does anyone have a list of the types with their identifying numbers? Countries that have recovered their independence since the collapse of the Soviet Union seem to have broadly retained the original system, although wagons have been quite often renumbered for reasons that are not known.
