Severn Tunnel Car Carrying Service

Post by RichardCoulthurst » Sun Dec 21, 2014 2:14 pm

Can anyone confirm the date that the Severn Tunnel Car Carrying Service ceased?

The opening of the Severn Road Bridge in 1966 obviously brought the service to an end. The Beachley to Aust ferry service ceased the day before the bridge opened.

However, the recent book "The South Wales Direct Line: History and Working" by P D Rendall (Crowood Press) says:

"When the new Severn Road Bridge opened in 1966, car trains became less well used and soon ceased to run."

This implies that the trains did continue for a time after the bridge opened.

I will also be interested in any ephemera or paper-work about the service such as tickets, passenger information, official working instructions, etc.
