On Saturday 9th September Bob and I set off to St Pancras on the high speed.
Because of engineering work we were then on what seems to be a ridiculously long trek to the Victoria line platform to pick up the Bakerloo for Paddington at Oxford Circus.
We were booked on the 10.28 Swansea departure (special timetable due to the Badminton line closure for electrification and embankment stabilisation) and had to wait until 3 minutes before the departure platform was indicated, but not too much of a scrum as the train was not crowded. From Swindon it was nonstop to Patchway via Dr Days Junction, and we had decent bacon baguettes from the refreshment car on the way
Cardiff Station has certainly become very Welsh since last there, but as all info is repeated in English we got our train to Barry Island! After Cadoxton the rail transport using Dow Corning chemical works is in view with some of the convoluted approach route.
There are a few things from the old days still visible, including Barry loco shed, latterly used as a wagon works, and still in use by Barry Railway Centre as a commercial railway engineering operation with many items of rolling stock dotted around can be seen from the train in the Barry Station area.
At Barry Island station the passenger line is cut off abruptly at the end of the platform and there is an impressive new looking foot and cycle bridge that spans all railway tracks used by the Barry Tourist Railway which has apparently now wrapped up operations for this year.
There is a two road shed which is apparently being developed as a museum looking to be in quite good historical order, and you can walk down a cutting to the entrance to “The Tunnel” (sign posted as such) which once led the railway onto a pier and is apparently now a shooting range. The station building remains in good shape and houses a War Museum, open one day a week, and a café which according to locals “is always open”, but somehow was not, although the adjacent pleasure ground was fairly busy on a rainy day.
Back to Cardiff on unit 142075, which screamed really loudly and annoyingly on every curve, and on to Coryton where the route continued beyond the buffer stops.
Then to Cardiff Queen Street for a full Cardiff Bay train which was a real buffer stop to stop experience. On arrival at what used to be Bute Road, it seemed as if all it had ever been was a single track buffer terminus, but an amble around found the remains of a through platform to the east, presumably for traffic to Bute Docks, but did passenger traffic go any further?
Back to Cardiff Queen Street then Cardiff Central for a snack in the buffet and then the 18.23 to Paddington.
A good day out to three truncated branches, finding ever helpful railway staff, but leaving a lot more to be seen at all three, if ever we get back!
No new rolling stock was seen in action

As far as can be ascertained, no regular passenger service ever ran south of Cardiff Bay station. South of the station, the line just served the thousands of dock sidings. According to RA Cooke's GWR atlas, Bay station (of course called Bute Road at the time) was on a single track in 1947 (it was double just north of the station).
