Description

This volume, by Paul Chancellor,  covers the detailed history of the British Railways Standard Tank engines which were built between 1951 and 1957. They were designed to cover the projected requirements for intermediate and short distance haulage, mainly passenger trains, for a period of forty years. This plan was very soon curtailed, however, by the 1955 Modernisation Programme which envisaged early phasing out of steam haulage in favour of diesel and electric traction.

Page size 212 x 272mm, softback, 168 pages 189 illustrations including 16 in colour.
