Description

The Hughes and Stanier 2-6-0s

John Young and David Tyreman the coauthors have produced a book covering all the 285 locomotives that comprised these classes of engines based on their personal involvement and research. One co-author worked in the CME’s office on technical matters and was therefore in direct contact with Stanier when new classes were being worked up including the 2-6-0. The other is heavily involved in the preservation of one of the surviving locomotives. As usual with RCTS books all aspects of construction, modification, trials, use and allocation are covered in detail including storage and disposal. There are also chapters on the four in preservation.

214x276mm, casebound, 210pages, 171 illustrations, 24 in colour. Published 2009.

The Jubilee 4-6-0s second edition

Stanier was lured from the GWR in 1932 to address the LMS problem of heavier trains and small engines requiring much expensive double heading. The Jubilee 4-6-0s were one of his solutions. He had to contend with loading gauge and weight restrictions on the Midland, Caledonian and Highland lines. While two cylinders gave the best acceleration, the hammer blow from 6ft 9in driving wheels would have been unacceptable so three cylinders were used, with a light taper boiler GWR style. 191 were built between 1934 and 1936.

In the early days they would not steam though still achieved outstanding mileages of 50,000 – 70,000 annually. Retubing resolved the steaming problems, and from 1935 when one was named to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary they became the Jubilees. With their wide usage, aesthetic looks and romantic names they became very popular.

This long awaited book by Ray Townsin presents the complete design, modifications, livery, allocation and use for each engine including much new information.
