The Deltic Executive - 6th May 2017

Postby Ian Prince » Sat May 06, 2017 8:52 pm

Pathfinder and the Deltic PS in conjunction with DRS, ran a tour today from Willington, Derbys via Burton on Trent, Derby, Leeds, Hull, Doncaster, Gainsborough Lea Road, Sleaford, and Peterborough to London Kings Cross, followed by a return along the ECML to Leeds behind Deltic D9009. Deltic turned out in early 1970s blue un-renumbered, with a blue/grey set of mainly 1970s vintage air-con coaches. 68022 did the first section to Hull, and e.c.s. shunt to Bounds Green in London and remained at the rear for the return to Leeds.

Platform 2 arrival at Kings Cross mirrored the platform used for the final BR Deltic hauled excursion 35 years ago in 1982.

The tour ran well with only a few minor problems, A broken rail outside Derby cased some confusion the books platform was occupierd by Vouager, and when asked which platform the excursion would use, asked her superior, got the answer we don't know!! The announcer gave the information as the train arrived! The loco was out of gauge at Shfeffield going north so the train picked up and set down at Swindon with short platforms. There was a similar issue at the operationa/photoshop at Spallding where the platform has been curtailed 4 vehicle trains, mass movevemt of people through thee train! On both legs of the ECML 100 mph running was acheived with a maximum of 102.Among the freight locomotives noted was newly arrived 70816 at Doncaster. On the return there were no problems at Sheffield so the train passed through non stop.Arrival at Derby wa 6 minutes late.An excellent day

It should be said that whilst the schedules were not that demanding for a fine 100mph thorough bred machine, D9009 arrived at Kings Cross, 10 mins early at 14:10 at Platform 2.

On the return, an on-time arrival at Wakefield followed the 7 minute late departure from Kings Cross Platform 8.

68022 which covered the return leg from Leeds to Willington was not quite so hot at recovering lost time it would seem.
