SUMMARY:Tunnel vision : The story of the Metropolitan Railway - Colin Brading
DESCRIPTION:Colin is a railway civil engineer\, retired now after a career of more than 50 years. He was born and raised close to the Metropolitan railway\, and have used it for leisure and commuting purposes in the past\, but it has also had a significant work-related focus for me. So\, it’s close to my heart! \nThe Metropolitan opened the world’s first underground railway in January 1863. It was less than four miles long\, but London’s ‘tube’ network has grown from this pioneering venture and it has inspired metro systems throughout the world. \n \nThe talk describes the Metropolitan Railway’s origins and how it quickly developed into a proudly independent ‘main line’ railway company\, before becoming  a part of the new London Transport in 1933. Much has changed since then\, and in bringing the story up to date the talk also looks at some of the excellent heritage operations of recent years – not least the Met 150 events that celebrated one hundred and fifty eventful years.

SUMMARY:AGM and My Travels in 2025\, Rail 200 and More.
DESCRIPTION:The Hitchin & Welwyn Garden City Branch AGM followed by a presentation by John Tigg. \nFrom a very young age\, living in North West London between the West Coast Mainline and Metropolitan / Great Central route\, John has had an interest in railways.  Despite spending his last years before retirement travelling the country for a major plant supplier to the rail industry he was unable to visit many of the heritage railways close to his work. Since retiring in 2019\, living on the Bedfordshire / Buckinghamshire border\, with the West Coast Mainline on his doorstep\, he is centrally located to visit many of the railways on his ‘bucket list’. \nJohn describes his presentation as: .“A mix of standard and narrow gauge from national and heritage locations – local-to-home WCML and East West Rail to Wales and the Midlands. Some rare shots both traction and location. 2025 was a varied year!” \nDoors open 13:30 for 14:00 start.
