SUMMARY:WFD Branch Meeting - 'A Tale of Two Halves'\, by Richard Morris\, 2nd June 2026
DESCRIPTION:RICHARD MORRIS – Two separate talks tonight\, the first half – ‘Inter-City 125 High Speed Trains’. These iconic trains were launched onto the BR Network in 1976 and could be found across large parts of the country for nearly 50 years. This presentation is an enthusiast’s view of our High-Speed Trains. The second half – ‘Holland and Belgium’. This section will look at visits to Holland and Belgium between 2009 and 2017. We will look at how their railways differ from the UK. One or two trains might look vaguely familiar! \nFurther details will be added nearer the date. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting\, doors open from 18:30 for a 19:00 start\, with a half-time break for refreshments\, and we aim to finish around 21:30.

SUMMARY:Signalling Topics
DESCRIPTION:From starting his railway career as a Junior Railman at Chatham in 1974 to becoming the Incident Controller at Croydon in 2008\, Peter Gibbons has gained a wealth of rail operating experience and knowledge throughout the former Central and South Eastern Divisions of BR Southern Region. \nPeter takes us through the evolution of railway signalling in the 1820’s to the present day with an emphasis on its development in Southern England.  The talk is well illustrated with many of the images taken from a privileged position on the ‘inside’.\nMany Southern enthusiasts will know him through his frequent and incisive contributions to the SR Email Group.\n

SUMMARY:The Broad Gauge Way Gang - Didcot Railway Centre Saturday 23rd May 2026
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what life was like in the mid-Victorian era working on the broad gauge\nGWR? For a unique opportunity at Didcot Railway Centre (DRC). Would you like to experience the\nreality of working for a day on some GWR broad gauge trackwork in a near authentic 1880’s railway\nsetting?\nOn Saturday 23 rd May 2026 a limited group of RCTS members (under the supervision of Didcot\nRailway Centre staff) will be given the opportunity to carry out some basic light maintenance work\non and around the DRC broad gauge railway line. We will be based for this day in the DRC broad\ngauge P.way cabin\, complete with (weather permitting) coal fired heating and tea brewing facilities.\nStarting at 9:30am\, DRC will provide training for us to try our hand at carrying out a few (not to\nstrenuous) maintenance tasks on their authentic GWR broad gauge track layout. DRC will provide all\nthe tools necessary to undertake the work. As DRC will be open to the public on this date\, it is\nsuggested that suitable 1880’s railway staff clothing should be worn (i.e. heavy work boots\, large\nblack trousers with braces\, white shirt (without collar)\, black jacket\, waistcoat\, and dark flat cap etc).\nA donation of £5 per person will be taken on the to cover the DRC costs for basic materials used (i.e.\nCoal).\nAs this date (23 rd May) is 134 th anniversary of the removal of the final section of GWR broad gauge\ntrack in the South West of England. DRC may also provide some appropriate provisions (similar to\nthose provided to track workers back in 1892).\nWhile on the site it should be possible to view other projects currently being undertaken\, including\nthe reconstruction of the GWR Heyford station building (originally constructed is 1850).\nFor further details and to book your place for this day\, please contact the Thames Valley Branch\nFixtures Secretary (Andrew Jenkins) by email at tv-fixtures@rcts.org.uk

SUMMARY:AGM and My Travels in 2025\, Rail 200 and More.
DESCRIPTION:The Hitchin & Welwyn Garden City Branch AGM followed by a presentation by John Tigg. \nFrom a very young age\, living in North West London between the West Coast Mainline and Metropolitan / Great Central route\, John has had an interest in railways.  Despite spending his last years before retirement travelling the country for a major plant supplier to the rail industry he was unable to visit many of the heritage railways close to his work. Since retiring in 2019\, living on the Bedfordshire / Buckinghamshire border\, with the West Coast Mainline on his doorstep\, he is centrally located to visit many of the railways on his ‘bucket list’. \nJohn describes his presentation as: .“A mix of standard and narrow gauge from national and heritage locations – local-to-home WCML and East West Rail to Wales and the Midlands. Some rare shots both traction and location. 2025 was a varied year!” \nDoors open 13:30 for 14:00 start.

SUMMARY:Lines to Midhurst\, via Petworth\, Petersfield & Chichester
DESCRIPTION:The major part of the evening will be a presentation entitled “Rails to Midhurst” which is an illustrated talk given by former Assistant County Archivist Bill Gage of West Sussex Record Office. The presentation is not a technical one and can be enjoyed by both railway enthusiasts and those interest in social history .\n\nThe opening of a railway is always a significant event but for Midhurst this was unusual as the residents witnessed three such occasions\, namely September 1864\, October 1866 & July 1881. The sleepy town of Midhurst not only had three railway lines but also two railway stations which resulted in a number of interesting tales. The presentation will include the funeral train to Midhurst of a major national figure\, the runaway engine at Petworth\, Royal Trains at Singelton & Midhurst\, Sir Edward Elgar at Fittleworth\, and bombs and washout on the Chichester- Midhurst line. Film footage of the last train over the Pulborough- Petersfield line will also be shown.\n

SUMMARY:Midland Main Line miscellany - Phil Lyndsey
DESCRIPTION:Phil Lindsey takes us on a journey along the Midland Main Line from St Pancras to Ratcliffe on Soar\, with the main focus being the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire sections.  The presentation contains many of Phil’s own images\, from the ‘Leicester Gap’ years to the modern day\, but also draws on the extensive and historical Midland Railway Society archive of photos\, posters\, maps and timetables.  It’s a real eclectic mix of material that will hopefully be of interest to railway historians and enthusiasts of steam and modern traction alike.  There are several ‘then and now’ comparisons at locations en-route.  It’s not intended to be exhaustive and at times focuses on historical locations that are rarely covered elsewhere such as Welsh Harp\, Great Bowden\, Gumley and Newton.

SUMMARY:The Harwich Branch
DESCRIPTION:A Hitchin & Welwyn Garden City Branch presentation by Dave Goodyear. \nThe Harwich branch has a rich and varied history\, with its combination of named  boat trains to Parkeston Quay and extensive freight services for the Harwich Train Ferries\, as well as local passenger and goods services.  The line was electrified in 1986 but this unfortunately heralded the start of major changes in traffic flow which resulted in the loss of much of the branch traffic. \nThis talk will cover the branch history from its opening in 1854 through to the present day\, showing the variety of trains through the steam\, diesel and electric eras\, along with the key branch infrastructure. \nDoors open 13:30 for 14:00 start.

SUMMARY:1\,000 eggs on a bicycle! - Colin Boocock
DESCRIPTION:35018 Bournemouth Belle in 1956 Colin Boocock is\, among other things\, a member of the Railway Photographic Society\, having been a railway photographer covering much of the world in the 79 years since he started taking pictures. He worked for British Rail and Railtrack for 41 years and then part-time for a decade or so after he retired from full-time work. He is also the author of many magazine articles and railway books. \n1\,000 eggs on a bicycle! consists largely of railway photographs taken in every year since 1947\, the year Colin first started railway photography\, right up to the present day. A number of clubs have enjoyed their first showing immensely. This was partly because of the huge range of railway content\, all types of trains in all sorts of places in the U.K. and in many other countries of the world. The reason for the bizarre title of the show must remain a secret until your club sees it.
