SUMMARY:The Railways of Mid-Anglia\, 1845 to 2023
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of the railway network of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire: how and why it developed in the way it did and the impact the railways have had on the region’s landscape\, towns (particularly the major rail centres of Cambridge\, March and Peterborough)\, industries and agriculture\, as well as motive power and rolling stock. \n\nUntil taking early retirement\, Tony Kirby was Co-ordinator of Strategic and Curriculum Planning for Anglia Ruskin University\, and before that Principal Lecturer in History. He is a past President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society and Chair of the Cambridge Records Society\, and is Secretary of the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History and the County Advisory Group on Archives and Local Studies. Over the past few years he has written a number of commentaries on old Ordnance Survey maps for Alan Godfrey\, including Brentwood\, Halstead\, Romford and Hornchurch\, and north Thames-side from West Ham to Tilbury. \nFor ten years he edited Nieuwsbrief\, the journal of the Benelux Railways Society. \nHis research interests lie in urban historical geography (especially market towns and  seaside resorts) and although a resident of Cambridgeshire for the past 60 years (and slowly started to appreciate a dieselised ‘Swedey’) his first love remains the North Eastern Railway\, from his youth in North Yorkshire. \nEven when we are running Zoom meetings\, the branch still has outgoings. SUMMARY:A look at the history of the Wallingford and Watlington Railway
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will look at the history of the Branch Line from the original opening in 1866 to the current day and an explanation of how the nickname of the “ The Bunk” came about. This includes takeover by the GWR in 1872\, building of the station at Cholsey and subsequent growth in traffic pre-WW2 followed by the closure in 1965 like many other branch lines. The talk will then bring the story up to the present following the formation of the preservation society in 1983. The talk will be illustrated with images recently donated by staff who worked the line and offices at Wallingford.

DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Harrison presents a selection of images from the LCGB/NRM Ken Nunn collection\, covering the period 1923-1929. \nThis year marks the Centenary of the 1923 Grouping\, when most of the Railways of Great Britain were amalgamated into the ‘Big Four’ – the greatest reorganisation they had suffered in their first century\, which was marked by the Railway Century Exhibition at Darlington in 1925. Tonight’s presentation looks at Britain’s railways between 1923 and 1929\, as the multitude of preceding companies were reorganised into the four systems which most of us are familiar with – a process which did not always go smoothly. \nFor this virtual event there is a suggested donation of £2.
