DESCRIPTION:Ian presents a fascinating look at the development of the Standard class 4 2-6-0s and 76077 in particular.  The engine spent almost all of its short life allocated to Sutton Oak depot and Ian explores the engine’s time there\, before transferring to Springs Branch when the shed closed.  Six months later in December 1967\, 76077 was withdrawn along with three sisters\, together being the last four members of the class to be withdrawn and moved to Barry scrapyard.  The engine’s remarkable rescue and initial restoration work is covered\, which was followed by 30 years of inactivity when the engine was largely forgotten.  Very rapid progress is now being made in restoration of the engine\, aiming for a 2026 steaming.  Ian’s presentation is richly illustrated with historic pictures as well as bringing the story completely up to date.

SUMMARY:The Last Years of British Steam; and Early Ventures Seeking it Overseas
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1960s Colin Miell started travelling to take colour slides of steam in its last years on British Rail – including spending 15 guineas on 1T57. And when it was over in Britain\, he started venturing overseas in search of more\, visiting Northern Ireland\, the Isle of Man\, and Europe (both sides of the iron curtain)\, and then further afield. Half a century later\, he started scanning his slides\, and tonight shows the fruits of his labours\, including some earlier black and white images from the mid 1960s; while some ‘modern (then!) traction’ and ferries also feature. Those familiar with his photography will know we have a treat in store. \nOne of the Halle test locos\, 18 201\, stands at Berlin Lichtenberg Station\, having just arrived with a regular passenger working from the north on 8th September 1969. SUMMARY:The Railway over the Stainmore Pass: Post War Boom & Bust on the North Trans-Pennine
DESCRIPTION:Chris Rowley (Network Rail Capacity Planning Director) has a particular affection for the Trans Pennine Stainmore route (Bishop Auckland – Kirby Stephen – Penrith) closed in 1962. He has written an authoritative history of the route\, England’s highest main line\, which is published in November. The talk will cover the history of the line and its operation\, the wider financial crisis that engulfed Britain’s Railways in the late 1950s and why Stainmore became the first strategic cross country route to close in 1962. The presentation will share previously unseen images of the route and technology permitting… a short section of rare Super 8 footage of RCTS operations over Stainmore summit in 1962.

However\, the creation of this vast network was not intended to modernise India for the sake of its people but rather was a means for the colonial power to govern the huge country under its control\, serving its British economic and military interests. DESCRIPTION:The railway has been learning from accidents and incident since its inception\, but in a fluid industry – where staff retire\, move on or move in from elsewhere – there is a very real concern that lessons learnt in the more recent past will be forgotten. Author\, RCTS member and Operational Feedback Lead at the Rail Safety & Standards Board Greg Morse will describe the railway accidents at Clapham (1988)\, Ladbroke Grove (1999) and Hatfield (2000)\, covering their causes and the lessons learnt from them.
