On the night of 2nd June 1944, the leading wagon of a train of high explosives from Whitemoor to Ipswich, hauled by WD 2-8-0 7337, caught fire at Soham. The train crew detached the wagon from the train and were drawing it forward when it exploded, killing the fireman and the signal man and injuring several others, but saving many more lives had the whole train exploded. This is a new commemorative plaque at Soham station. Photo: Michael Smyth
