Barton-upon-Humber Class 153's in 2021

Since the early 1990's, Class 153 single car DMU's have been a familiar sight on rail services in Yorkshire. By late 2020 they could only be found working a small number of Northern Trains operated services in the County*. Those being used having been granted temporary exemption from the Railways (Interoperabilty) Regulations 2011, which after repeated extensions were due to expire at the end of May 2021 but  were then again extended to December 2021. The exemption requiring that in Yorkshire they were only permitted to operate in passenger service when coupled with compliant units.

The purpose of this feature is to give details of the services Class 153s were used on in Yorkshire commencing from the start of the Winter 2020/21 timetable on December 14th and continuing until their final passenger use in the County which was on Tuesday 27th November 2021.

The Class 153's used in Yorkshire were based at Newton Heath, Manchester and until mid January arrived in the county by way of the 2I09 19:56 Wigan North Western - Leeds service Monday-Saturday. They then tended to spend on average of four days in Yorkshire before leaving the county by way of the 2T40 06:32 Brighouse - Leeds / 2J84 07:17 Leeds-Manchester Victoria services Monday-Saturday. The full Yorkshire diagrams usually worked during those four days are shown below, these included visits to Lancashire and Cumbria via Hellifield.

From the 18th January 2021 a reduced service was operated with no regular internal Yorkshire diagrams. Class 153's still being used on the Monday - Saturday 1J06 09:56 Manchester Victoria - Leeds and 1J19 14:12 Leeds - Manchester Victoria with a unit swap sometimes taking place at Leeds. Sets stabled at Huddersfield were also occasionally added to the Monday - Saturday 2062 07:03 Huddersfield – Castleford, 2063 07:58 Castleford – Huddersfield to ensure they remain serviceable.

In late March sets started to be stabled at Kingston-upon-Hull and saw occasional use from there, primarily on trains to Bridlington.

The introduction of the Summer 2021 timetable on Sunday 16th May concentrated remaining use on the Leeds - Bradford Interchange - Manchester Victoria Calder Valley route with two sets stabling overnight at Leeds.

The links below take you to a page for each month where details for each day can be found. For simplicity only the first and last train worked on the above diagrams is shown if all the trains between these were also worked.

The Cleethorpes - Barton-Upon-Humber service had been an outpost of Class 153 operations for many years.  This came to an end in April 2021,  Information about the final monthes of use on this service can be found at Barton-upon-Humber Class 153's in 2021 or by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

* - During December 2020 and early January 2021 East Midlands Railway trains between Nottingham and Liverpool Lime Street via Sheffield were occasionally being strengthened with Class 153's.
