In September 1948 it was permanently paired with brake third 2832 (just visible at right) as set 24 and was then employed on west country local services until withdrawal in July 1964 - by then under Western Region control, so the 'S' prefix to the number would have been replaced by 'W' for the last year or so. While locomotives – especially of the steam variety – took the glory, the coaches that they hauled were just as important. Mike King comes to tell of those introduced by the Southern Railway between the grouping of 1923 and the late 1930s, under the supervision of Richard Maunsell, its first Chief Mechanical Engineer.
