Papal Visit 1982

The visit to Great Britain of His Holliness Pope John Paul II (28th May – 2nd June 1982) required the running of an unprecedented number of additional trains many of which were locomotive hauled. It was also necessary to make numerous changes to timetabled trains during this period.

A summary of the principle locomotive hauled highlights can be found here. This hopefully includes all the locomotive hauled trains run specifically for worshippers as well as many of the associated revised timetabled trains. Whilst the locomoties used are known in the majority of cases, they are not known for a small number of trains. If you can help with these gaps please contact Peter Hall who would also welcome any corrections.
