1988 – 20081+20166 head 2F22

The norm in the 1970’s and 1980’s was for the DMU operated trains between Sheffield and Huddersfield to use power twin sets. Thus, DMU failures requiring assistance were few and far between. However, on 18th August 1988 locomotive assistance was provided throughout between Sheffield and Huddersfield to an inoperable DMU. Dragging of such DMU’s between Sheffield and Leeds at the time wasn’t all that unusual, but not to Hudderfield via Penistone.

The train involved was 2F22 16:55 Sheffield – Huddersfield and even more remarkable was that Class 20’s 20081+20166 were used. ‘Calder Valley’ Class 110 DMU Cars 52066+51829 were the passenger accommodation. On arrival at Huddersfield the formation went forward to Leeds as the 19:01 Huddersfield – Leeds.

This is the only known occurence of Class 20’s through Penistone on a public service train. Use on enthusiast railtours was also extremely rare. Those of which we are aware are listed below.

19th October 1974LCGB “Doncaster Rover”. Routed between Huddersfield and Barnsley via Penistone and Silkstone. 40113 hauled the train as far as Penistone where 20084+20043 took over.

12th May 1990 The Class 20 Locomotive Society “The Vladivostock Avoider”. Routed between Barnsley and Huddersfield via Silkstone and Penistone. 20132+20010 were used through Penistone.
