For the first time since 1991, regular day time locomotive hauled trains ran between Paddington and the West Country. Taken together with the additional locomotive hauled trains to/from the North and Midlands added the previous year the number of trains was at a level not seen since 1992.
The 1999 table of trains and the locomotives used can be found here
It had been intended that the 12.42 from Paddington and 11.40 from Penzance would also convey ‘Motorail’ traffic but construction of the vans intended for this traffic had not been completed.
This was also the Summer of the Solar Eclipse, details of excursion trains run for this can be found here
Also of note was that a couple of the locomotive hauled Paddington trains also ran at holiday times during the following winter timetable. A table of these trains can be found here
Additional information about the trains covered is welcomed, particularly correcting, adding to, or filling gaps in our records of locomotives used. Please contact Peter Hall with any additional information.
