SUMMARY:"Bilston and Wolverhampton from Steam Days to Tramway" by Michael Smyth
DESCRIPTION:Wolverhampton was served by two mainlines\, the ex GWR route from Paddington and the ex LMS route from Euston.  BR’s investment in the 1960s was focused entirely on the ex LMS route\, and once the full electric service to Euston began in March 1967 the GWR route to Birmingham went into terminal decline and closed on the 4th March 1972. However\, Snow Hill station was re-opened in 1987 and the former GWR trackbed to Wolverhampton has been converted into a tram route\, which opened in 1999. \nThis presentation starts in the early 1960s when steam was still predominant on both routes\,  through the years of transition to diesel and electric traction\, and the many years of change from the 1970s through to the present day.  It also illustrates how the area\, especially around Bilston\, Wolverhampton\, was once a heartland of manufacturing industry all of which has now vanished.  A presentation created by two of our members Mike Page and Michael Smyth\, both of who once worked at same large factory in Bilston.

SUMMARY:"The North Eastern Railway and the Beginnings of the East Coast Mainline" by Raymond Schofield
DESCRIPTION:Our 2025/26 season opens with a much-anticipated visit from Raymond Schofield who will take us through the history of the East Coast Main Line. The North-East of England was at the forefront of railway growth\, starting some 300 years ago with colliery lines delivering coal to staithes on the Tyne and Tees. Early passenger lines followed and by 1840 York\, the ‘Gateway to the North’\, was connected to London. Shortly after\, in 1847\, the first Scottish trains came this way. In his talk\, Ray will look at some of the significant early lines and how they slotted into that 1847 route to the North. He will then follow the many changes through to the East Coast Main Line we know today\, using his own pictures and purchased images. The presentation is primarily steam-age\, but the pioneering North Eastern electrification developments are also included\, along with the occasional early diesel.

SUMMARY:"Roger Harrison’s East Anglian Railways" by Dave Pearce
DESCRIPTION:For our final meeting of the 2024/25 season\, we are delighted to welcome Dave Pearce who will be presenting ‘Roger Harrison’s East Anglian Railways’. \nRoger Harrison was an avid and loyal member of the Norfolk Railway Society from its inception in 1955 until he passed away in 2010. He was extraordinarily generous to the Society in his will\, not only with a sizeable donation to Society funds\, but also in making a bequest of his LNER photos and negatives to the club’s archive. In 2012 David and his friend and fellow member\, Richard Adderson\, were asked to compile a book of Roger’s images\, funded by his bequest\, so that all the then members could benefit from Roger’s generosity. The show is a slightly abridged version of the book\, but\, nonetheless\, illustrates Roger’s eye for detail alongside his ability to capture and record the general scene up to the end of GE steam in 1962. He was\, in some ways\, fairly parochial in his coverage of East Anglia\, favouring a few locations and ignoring many\, so it was quite a challenge to create a logical narrative from his somewhat disparate range of images. Nonetheless\, the book was well received by the membership and considered to be a worthy tribute to Roger and the memories evoked by his pictures. \nDavid was born in Suffolk\, brought up in the East Midlands\, went to college in the North East\, and spent his working life as an itinerant teacher in Norfolk and Suffolk\, ending up dealing with permanently excluded pupils in Norfolk for the local authority. He took early retirement in 2011 but returned to part-time work in late 2015. \nHe has always had an interest in railways\, and photography became equally as absorbing in 1962 when he was given his first camera. Since then\, via various cameras\, and an embrace of digital photography\, he has accumulated a substantial catalogue of his own images. He has also always taken an interest in images from other photographers\, particularly those with a shared affinity for locations\, aesthetics\, and a healthy disregard for convention. This additional collection has become something of an indulgence (wife would say obsession!)\, aided and abetted\, initially\, by a collection of negatives left in his care\, then by ‘negatives sent on approval’ but\, ultimately\, by the internet! \nDavid is also presently Chairman of the ‘Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership’ and Co-Chair of Community Rail Norfolk and belongs to two railway photographic circles\, together with umpteen railway societies. He has produced several books and articles\, especially on the former Great Central London extension. He has four sons\, none of whom has the remotest interest in railways or photography!

SUMMARY:"The Fylde Line: An 80s Ride from Manchester Victoria to Blackpool" by Alan Jones
DESCRIPTION:The 1980s were a period of significant change on BR.  New multiple units began to replace first generation ones.  Long standing traffics moved to road\, such as newspapers printed in Manchester and traditionally dispatched by rail to towns and cities across Northern England.  Remnants of domestic coal traffic still existed\, illustrated by workings on the Deepdale branch from Preston.  Decades old infrastructure remained at stations large and small along with mechanical signalling.  This changing scene is illustrated by a photographic journey from Manchester Victoria via Bolton and Preston to Blackpool North and South.

SUMMARY:"Railways to the Coast" by Tony Kirby
DESCRIPTION:The earliest railways to the coast were built for freight rather than passenger traffic but companies soon realised there was a potentially lucrative passenger market.  This talk examines both aspects from the 1840s to the present day.  Freight by rail has vanished from some once important ports eg Wisbech whilst others eg Felixstowe originate heavy flows.  Likewise the development of holiday and excursion traffic is illustrated with the GWR’s promotion of Cornwall and the NER’s of Scarborough through to a zenith in the 1950’s and then subsequent decline.
