SUMMARY:Railways 1933-36\, from the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society's Moseley collection
DESCRIPTION:A further presentation of photographs from the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society’s Moseley Archive of over 2000 photographs taken by the late Percy Moseley between 1911 and the 1970s. Following previous presentations of images from the 1940s and early 1950s\, for this evening’s presentation we return to the pre-war era of the early 1930s\, when many of the steam locos that were part of the spotting experience for many of us were only just appearing (or still in the future). It will be given by Robin Mathams\, joint archivist for the SCRS.

SUMMARY:Stuart Underdown’s Southern Memories - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:The late Stuart Underdown was a Society member and an accomplished photographer\, who put together a number of presentations\, including this one\, of his ‘Southern Memories’\, of his own photographs covering the period from the early 1960s through the 1970s\, together with some much older images that he had collected\, and ranging from Kent to the ‘withered arm’ lines in Devon and Cornwall. We much enjoyed Part 1 last December\, with much discussion of what we saw\, and remembered: so much so that we only saw a small part of what Stuart has assembled. So tonight we shall continue from where we left off…

SUMMARY:Roaming Around London With a Camera
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Brockett brings the results of his photographic roamings\, to show us the great diversity of trains and liveries to be seen around the capital in recent years. As he lives in London and so does a lot of his photography there\, it seemed a good idea to do a show based specifically on what can be seen in London. This evening’s show contains a brief selection of older shots\, but otherwise will feature shots taken in the last 2 – 2½ years. \n

SUMMARY:A Lifetime of Railway Photography
DESCRIPTION:Not quite a lifetime\, John took his first picture at the age of nine using his mother’s rather ancient folding camera. He was already interested in railways as most boys of his generation were\, where the passion came from for recording what he saw on film is lost in the mists of time but it’s been continuous ever since he acquired a simple Ilford camera for his twelfth birthday. He began to realise that the steam railway that he was privileged to grow up with was fast disappearing giving him greater impetus to carry on\, the only limiting factor was finance as it all had to be funded from pocket money and the proceeds of a paper round. Later when he started work he acquired more sophisticated equipment and recorded the end of steam on the Southern and in the NW and following that the preservation scene right up to the present day. He hopes there will be something of interest to everyone. If you remember his previous presentation to the branch\, you will very much make this a date for your diary.

SUMMARY:That was the Year that Was – 1966
DESCRIPTION:1966 was a busy year for Geoff: whilst still a schoolboy\, he covered a considerable amount of the country. This presentation includes scenes on various North Wales Narrow Gauge Lines and the Cambrian Coast\, holidays in the north west of England and several RCTS railtours. These include the ’Somerset & Dorset Farewell’\, the ‘Longmoor Military Railtour’ (which ran twice)\, the ‘Eight Counties Railtour’ and ‘East Midlander No. 7’. A couple of visits to Crewe Works\, Southern Region steam and lines out of Marylebone\, a smattering of London Transport steam and scenes around Chester and Birkenhead – the vast majority of photos in colour. \nGeoff Plumb is a lifelong railway enthusiast\, born in Sheffield in March 1949. From an early age he took thousands of photos\, the vast majority in colour\, documenting the decline and fall of steam locomotives. Geoff’s interest in photography led to his forty plus years career in Television\, starting with London Weekend TV as a cameraman in 1968\, later with Granada TV and finally as a freelance ‘lighting cameraman’. Many of Geoff’s photos have been published in magazines such as The Railway Magazine and Steam World\, and in books including Red Panniers – Last Steam on the Underground. The Royal Mail has even used a couple of his photos on specialist stamp issues! Geoff has an active photo gallery website at: www.plumbloco.co.uk where many of his pictures can be seen.

Steam specials also feature strongly\, not only various Society (and other) railtours\, but also Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train. But in many areas\, diesel traction was to the fore\, and is included in Geoff’s show. \nFor this virtual event there is a suggested donation of £2. SUMMARY:Railways of the Former USSR
DESCRIPTION:As the USSR came to an end in 1991\, tours for foreign railway enthusiasts became possible\, and your presenter participated in a number of these in the 1990s\, to Ukraine\, Russia and Belarus\, photographing what still very much – at least as it appeared to a westerner – the single railway system of the (former) USSR\, a country that had seemed so permanent. While the tours featured retained steam locomotives\, he also took the opportunity of recording the contemporary diesel and electric power: both steam and modern traction feature in his presentation.

SUMMARY:Remembering the end of Southern Steam - a personal view 50 years later
DESCRIPTION:1967 saw the end of steam operation on the Southern Region. In the months leading up to July 1967\, Des Shepherd made many visits to experience the final rites of steam operation in the south of England. \nFifty years on\, he decided to revisit many of the places he discovered then as well as to try to recreate certain trips and rail tours as close as the exact anniversary as possible. The objective was to replicate original photographs with present day ones. This shows how in many instances things have changed over half a century\, but how surprisingly\, how some things are just the same.
