SUMMARY:The History and Development of Stratford Depot
DESCRIPTION:This presentation outlines the history and development of Stratford depot\, then describes the depot in the late 1980s and his experiences as an engineering trainee there.  The various workings of the depot are detailed\, together with the area it served at the time.  It closes with the decline and eventual closure of the depot.\n\nHugh commenced his railway career in September 1987 as an engineering trainee.  He spent his first 3 months in the training school at Derby Litchurch Lane works before moving to Stratford depot.  After gaining his engineering qualifications and completing his training\, he spent 2 years at Bounds Green Intercity depot working on class 91 locomotives and Mk4 coaches.  He moved to Eurostar in May 1994 where he spent the majority of his career.  He began at North Pole International depot as a technician and progressed through various supervisory and management roles.  These involved the maintenance\, fault finding\, repair and reliability of class 373 units.  After a stint with Network Rail\, he returned to Eurostar to assist with the introduction of the class 374 units\, liaising with SNCF\, SNCB and the Dutch railways NS.  He took early retirement from Eurostar Temple Mills International depot a few years ago\, finishing his career as a senior electrical engineer.\n\nPhysical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall also available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting.

SUMMARY:Peterborough to Beijing\, the Story of a Journey
DESCRIPTION:Nick Garnham will tell us about an epic journey the first step of which is to board a train at Peterborough. It describes the journey\, all by rail\, from Peterborough to Beijing in 2019. The trains\, the food\, the people\, and on train life are all illustrated\, as are many of the stations and locomotives sighted. The journey uses modern traction\, but there is plenty of history along the route as well as a few surprises!\n\nPhysical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall also available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting.

SUMMARY:Not So Much a Hobby\, More A Way of Life
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nJim grew up in Stepney Green and his love of railways started when his father took him to Kings Cross to ‘watch the trains’. He remembers seeing A3 Pacifics ‘Pretty Polly’ and ‘Blair Athol’. The latter painted in early British Railways express passenger blue at the time\, made an  impressive start from Platform 10\, with her six big driving wheels slipping violently on the wet\, greasy rails. Living in East London meant that he was within easy reach of all the main London Termini. His favourite was the ‘old’ Euston and its Princess Royal Pacifics. He joined British Rail on leaving school. With the decline of steam and having little interest in modern traction he developed and interest in passenger stations particularly the wonderfully oversized buildings on the North London Railway which led to Jim founding the North London Railway Historical Society in 1989 of which he is currently the chairman. \nJim’s talk looks at railway enthusiasm\, largely in the twentieth century\, and includes many of the items which were produced for enthusiasts and budding enthusiasts over the years. These include books\, magazines\, models\, jigsaw puzzles and gramophone records\, along with the expensive O-Gauge models offered by Bassett-Lowke tantalisingly displayed in their Holborn showroom. No doubt there will also be a fair selection of contemporary images of locos\, trains and stations too. \n

SUMMARY:Railways Remembered - Cheshire and North Wales
DESCRIPTION:Remote Speaker Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nUsing material from Online Transport Archive\, Charles will show a selection of colour images from this area. The material is drawn from a number of key collections in the Archive\, most notably John McCann\, Charles Firminger and Phil Tatt. Images deal with the period from the mid-1950s to early 1970\, and cover steam\, diesel and electric\, BR\, industry and heritage\, and a few surprises along the way. \nThe meeting this month will be a bit of an experiment – whilst we will have a physical meeting in Shenfield\, our speaker\, Charles Roberts\, will be delivering his presentation over Zoom. Images will be shown in the hall on the projector as normal and an audio amplifier will allow members to hear the presentation clearly. If this works then it opens up the possibility of us having a greater variety of speakers including those who live too far away to be physically present in the hall.

SUMMARY:The Settle and Carlisle Line - The 1960's to the present day
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nThis presentation explains and records the changing fortunes of the Settle and Carlisle line from the last days of steam in the 1960s\, through the years of decline towards expected closure\, its reprieve in 1989 and subsequent resurgence. \n100 pictures illustrate the variety of steam and diesel workings to be seen over the decades. All of these are set against the backdrop of the structures and scenery of this most scenic of routes\, as well as the ever changing and sometimes extreme weather.

SUMMARY:British Rail 1986 to 1992 - The Evolution of Business Management
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nIn 1982 BR created new business units. Passenger Services were split into InterCity\, Network SouthEast and Provincial Services\, freight was split into Trainload\, Speedlink and Freightliner and a parcels sector was created. Mervyn Rogers will explore how this Sectorisation came about and how this affected the run-up to Privatisation.

SUMMARY:The North Eastern Railway from Stockton and Darlington to the ECML
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nThe history of the NER was made-up of several earlier and smaller individual railways. The Tanfield Railway\, originally a wagonway dating from as early as 1725\, the iconic Stockton and Darlington Railway\, the Clarence Railway\, Stanhope & Tyne Railway\, Newcastle & Carlisle Railway\, the Leeds & Selby and more\, made the ultimate NER and the first East Coast Main Line. \nThe contribution of the latterly-discredited George Hudson\, The Railway King\, with was his foresight and ambition led to the establishment of that first route. All of the many changes from the first to the current East Coast main line via Doncaster\, York\, Darlington\, Durham and Newcastle to connect with the North British Railway at Berwick-on-Tweed are illustrated. \nThe NER also set the standard for early electrification\, a standard initially adopted by BR\, this too is illustrated.

SUMMARY:25 Years of Derek Cross Diesels 1959 to 1984
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nDavid Cross will present some more of his father’s slides which this time will feature diesels photographed in England between the years 1959 and 1984. \nDerek was a prolific photographer in the sixties and seventies but unlike many of his peers\, he continued to take railway pictures after 1968 despite the demise of steam. The early 1960’s saw large numbers of very short life diesels and photos of many of these long forgotten classes are included in David’s presentation showing them at work and not just in a rusting line awaiting the cutter’s torch!  Diesel locos really got into their groove in the late 1960s and were to be found on all freight workings and away from the electrified lines\, pretty much all long distance passenger services. Whilst many of the small BR modernisation prototype fleets were withdrawn by the 1970s\, a great number of classes survived into the 1980s amd 1990s with some classes\, all be it with new engines\, still to be found on the network today.

SUMMARY:The Monochrome Model Railway
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nRailway photographers often have their step-ladders in the boot of their car to allow them to get a few feet higher in search of the ideal image. Tonight’s presentation promises a more lofty view still. This presentation takes the form of a selection of views of the railways in East London & Essex taken from the Historic England Aerofilms collection. These show the railway from a totally different perspective. The illustrations presented here were taken between the 1920s and the 1950s and some show aspects of the lines not normally seen in photographs. \nOur speaker\, Nigel Bowdidge\, has been interested in railways for as long as he can remember. A detailed interest in the railways of East Anglia and East London began when he discovered the maps and photographs in the Essex Records Office and Chelmsford Borough Library when in his teens. Much photography of trains and stations\, both open and closed\, ensued thanks to his first full-time job at Ilford Films. Forty years of commuting to the City meant he could keep an eye on developments on the railway. Now semi-retired\, he finds there is enough railway information on the internet to keep the mind active!

SUMMARY:Middle East Travels
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall which will also be available on Zoom as a Hybrid Meeting. \nUnlike Europe\, the Middle East is a bit of a desert (no pun intended) for railways. However there are systems in some countries and Iain’s presentation will cover three of these namely: Israel\, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. \nIain is a South Essex member. His photos are always interesting and of excellent quality. He is a regular contributor of images to the major rail publications.

SUMMARY:40 Years of Preserving Deltics
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall also available via Zoom as a Hybrid \nThe ‘Deltics’ changed the image of East Coast Main Line in the 1960’s and became perhaps the most iconic of the BR Modernisation diesel locomotives. Fortunately a number of these imposing giants survived into preservation\, largely due to the efforts of the Deltic Preservation Group.  Our speaker\, Murray Brown\, has been chairman of the DPS for 30 years\, during which time the society has been on the main line twice\, built its own depot at Barrow Hill and in recent weeks has started up its third Deltic (D9015 Tulyar) after 27 years! The society has recently topped 1\,000 members which makes it one of the most successful locomotive preservation groups. Murray worked for BR for 18 years\, 14 years of which were in the office which ran the Deltics – he was effectively paid to do his hobby!

SUMMARY:On Great Eastern Metals From 1991 to Date
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall \nOur member\, Geoff Brocket\, is a prolific photographer\, who always seems to be able to get the photos that no one else can. This outing covers photos on the Great Eastern Railway from 1991 to the present day.  Like many of us\, Geoff prefers locos to multiple units so expect to see the whole range of motive power used on this line over the last 25 years or so. \nAs these images are on 35mm slides\, it is not possible to offer this talk via Zoom. \n

SUMMARY:Colchester in the Age of Steam
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall also available via Zoom as a Hybrid \nColchester is a major railway junction in Essex with much to interest the railway enthusiast. This talk will cover the period up to September 1962 when steam operation ceased through the town. The railway infrastructure in the town included three stations\, all with goods facilities\, a major locomotive depot\, a quay tramway and even a laundry. The area enjoyed a few years of concurrent steam\, diesel and electric operation\, during which a major station reconstruction was completed. \nDavid Goodyear has lived in Essex for most of his life and inherited his love of railways from his father\, who was a Senior Marine Engineer based at Parkeston Quay. Although living in Dovercourt David attended secondary school in Colchester and has maintained an interest in the railways of both the Harwich and Colchester areas. His career as a Chartered Mechanical Engineer started at Paxman in Colchester working on the HST Valenta engine\, but rapidly moved on to automotive engines at Perkins Peterborough\, and then returning to Essex to work at Ford’s Dunton engineering centre for 25 years before taking early retirement. He now lives near Saffron Walden with his wife\, two horses and a sixteenth century house\, which leaves a little time for continuing to pursue his interest in railways \n

SUMMARY:Who uses the railway?
DESCRIPTION:Physical meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall also available via Zoom as a Hybrid \nPhil’s presentation will begin by describing the Rail Freight Group\, it’s role and membership\, and remind everyone that we all use the railway in our daily lives by virtue of the homes we live in\, the energy we consume and the products we buy as consumers. \nIt will expand to cover the features of an ideal railway network for freight and considers some of the challenges that lie ahead. What will ‘rail reform’ look like from a freight perspective? What investments are needed to meet the growth target? What does the rail freight industry need to do to contribute to a decarbonised supply chain and what can be done in the field of innovation to improve efficiency and safety? \nPhil joined the Rail Freight Group in April 2021\, having spent 16 years with Essex County Council’s education service and prior to that in the fertilizer industry. \nHis passion for transport policy developed through his 39 years as an elected member with Ipswich Borough Council where he drew up the proposal for the Ipswich Freight Chord for the local plan and helped to initiate the East West Rail Consortium of local councils in the 1990s. \nSince joining RFG as the Assistant Policy manager in April 2021\, Phil has been working with Sub National Transport Bodies in helping them develop their transport strategies and priorities for investment as well as preparing policy responses on behalf of RGF members. He has written articles on Rail Freight for magazines including Modern Railways and the Scotsman. He also works with sub-national transport bodies as well as with Network Rail’s route investment teams. \nHe is a member of the Railfuture campaign group.

SUMMARY:Inter-railing for the Older Crowd
DESCRIPTION:Physical/Hybrid Meeting at Shenfield Parish Hall – This meeting will also be avaialble via Zoom \n\nThe title comes from a Facebook page of the same name\, which was a helpful resource in planning Dave’s trips. From April to June 2023 Dave spent three months travelling to 25 European countries\, using a senior Interrail pass. This was a series of short breaks\, 10 in all\, rather than one continuous trip. The images are (nearly) all from the modern European railway scene\, with maps to help with everyone’s European geographical knowledge.

SUMMARY:That Was The Year That Was: 1966
DESCRIPTION:1966 was a busy year for Geoff whilst still a schoolboy\, covering a considerable amount of the country. This includes scenes on various North Wales Narrow Gauge Lines and the Cambrian Coast\, holidays in the north west of England and several RCTS railtours. These include the ’Somerset & Dorset Farewell’\, the ‘Longmoor Military Railtour’ (which ran twice)\, the ‘Eight Counties Railtour’ and ‘East Midlander No. 7’. A couple of visits to Crewe Works\, Southern Region steam and lines out of Marylebone\, a smattering of London Transport steam and scenes around Chester and Birkenhead – the vast majority of photos in colour. \nGeoff Plumb is a lifelong railway enthusiast\, born in Sheffield in March 1949. From an early age he took thousands of photos\, the vast majority in colour\, documenting the decline and fall of steam locomotives. Geoff’s interest in photography led to his forty plus years career in Television\, starting with London Weekend TV as a cameraman in 1968\, later with Granada TV and finally as a freelance ‘lighting cameraman’. Many of Geoff’s photos have been published in magazines such as The Railway Magazine and Steam World\, and in books including Red Panniers – Last Steam on the Underground. The Royal Mail has even used a couple of his photos on specialist stamp issues! Geoff has an active photo gallery website at: www.plumbloco.co.uk where many of his pictures can be seen.

SUMMARY:The New Essex Lines of the GER
DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel has be interested in railways for all of his life. From early days of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ he has been hooked on railways and their history. He became a station adopter at Battlesbridge station in 2003. His railway career started with National Express East Anglia as a train dispatcher at Southend Victoria – a period that included the hectic weeks of the 2012 Olympics involving 12 hour shifts. He is a volunteer at Mangapps Railway Museum\, one of the best parts of which is listening to stories of former BR staff who visit the site – probably the best kind of information source.  Since 2010 Nathaniel has been a member of the GER Society and actively helps in providing information for the Society’s publications. He is currently a Customer Service Assistant for TFL working at Stratford Underground station.
