SUMMARY:Roger Harrison’s East Anglian Railways
DESCRIPTION:Roger Harrison was an avid and loyal member of the Norfolk Railway Society from its inception in 1955 until he passed away in 2010. He was extraordinarily generous to the Society in his will\, not only with a sizeable donation to Society funds\, but also in making a bequest of his LNER photos and negatives to the club’s archive. In 2012 David and his friend and fellow member\, Richard Adderson\, were asked to compile a book of Roger’s images\, funded by his bequest\, so that all the then members could benefit from Roger’s generosity. The show is a slightly abridged version of the book\, but\, nonetheless\, illustrates Roger’s eye for detail alongside his ability to capture and record the general scene up to the end of GE steam in 1962. He was\, in some ways\, fairly parochial in his coverage of East Anglia\, favouring a few locations and ignoring many\, so it was quite a challenge to create a logical narrative from his somewhat disparate range of images. Nonetheless\, the book was well received by the membership and considered to be a worthy tribute to Roger and the memories evoked by his pictures. \nDavid was born in Suffolk\, brought up in the East Midlands\, went to college in the North East\, and spent his working life as an itinerant teacher in Norfolk and Suffolk\, ending up dealing with permanently excluded pupils in Norfolk for the local authority. He took early retirement in 2011 but returned to part-time work in late 2015. \nHe has always had an interest in railways\, and photography became equally as absorbing in 1962 when he was given his first camera. Since then\, via various cameras\, and an embrace of digital photography\, he has accumulated a substantial catalogue of his own images. He has also always taken an interest in images from other photographers\, particularly those with a shared affinity for locations\, aesthetics\, and a healthy disregard for convention. This additional collection has become something of an indulgence (wife would say obsession!)\, aided and abetted\, initially\, by a collection of negatives left in his care\, then by ‘negatives sent on approval’ but\, ultimately\, by the internet! \nDavid is also presently Vice-Chairman of the ‘Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership’ and belongs to two railway photographic circles\, together with umpteen railway societies. He has produced several books and articles\, especially on the former Great Central London extension. He has four sons\, none of whom have the remotest interest in railways or photography! \nEven when we are running Zoom meetings\, the branch still has outgoings. Please consider making a donation to the branch for attending this meeting. It is easy just click on this link and then donate in multiples of £2.00 – just change the quantity if you are able to donate more than £2.00. You can pay by card or by PayPal. \n\n\nThank You

SUMMARY:The Railways of Mid-Anglia\, 1845 to 2023
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of the railway network of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire: how and why it developed in the way it did and the impact the railways have had on the region’s landscape\, towns (particularly the major rail centres of Cambridge\, March and Peterborough)\, industries and agriculture\, as well as motive power and rolling stock. \n\nUntil taking early retirement\, Tony Kirby was Co-ordinator of Strategic and Curriculum Planning for Anglia Ruskin University\, and before that Principal Lecturer in History. He is a past President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society and Chair of the Cambridge Records Society\, and is Secretary of the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History and the County Advisory Group on Archives and Local Studies. Over the past few years he has written a number of commentaries on old Ordnance Survey maps for Alan Godfrey\, including Brentwood\, Halstead\, Romford and Hornchurch\, and north Thames-side from West Ham to Tilbury. \nFor ten years he edited Nieuwsbrief\, the journal of the Benelux Railways Society. \nHis research interests lie in urban historical geography (especially market towns and  seaside resorts) and although a resident of Cambridgeshire for the past 60 years (and slowly started to appreciate a dieselised ‘Swedey’) his first love remains the North Eastern Railway\, from his youth in North Yorkshire. \nEven when we are running Zoom meetings\, the branch still has outgoings. Please consider making a donation to the branch for attending this meeting. SUMMARY:AGM and Members Slides
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will be held at Shenfield Parish Hall but the formal AGM part of the evening will be held as a Hybrid meeting in order to be as inclusive as possible. Remote comments and contributions will\, in general\, only be possible via the Zoom ‘Chat’ function. Should you wish to remotely address the meeting on a specific matter via video/audio please contact the secretary in advance so that arrangements can be made. \nThe meeting will include the traditional Christmas Fare and after the formal AGM\, there will be the opportunity for members to share a few of their slides or digital images. Technical limitations mean that the ‘Members Slides’ part of the meeting cannot be shared easily over Zoom. A camera will be left pointed at the screen but Zoom attendees should understand that the video and audio quality will not be as good as a normal Zoom meeting and is being provided on a ‘best efforts’ basis only.  The best experience will be obtained by physical attendance at Shenfield. \nShould you wish to share some of your images\, please let the secretary know in advance with an indication of the number of images and if you will want to use the slide projector or the digital projector. Any digital images will need to be on a USB memory stick.

SUMMARY:Roaming Around London with a Camera
DESCRIPTION:Those of us who live in London are very lucky for the sheer variety of rolling stock and liveries that can be seen and photographed. This is a quick-fire show of images taken in Greater London over the last two to three years that showcase that variety\, with an emphasis on the new and unusual. Although Geoff did a show under this title at Shenfield a while ago\, this is a fully updated presentation and Geoff has not shown any of these images at the branch previously. \nGeoff is now retired after working for London Underground. He is a familar figure at the branch and is to be found collecting money on the door of evert meeting. In addition to this important branch role he is also the RO Editor for fixtures and adverts and also writes the TfL notes for the Urban Railways section.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Father's Slides
DESCRIPTION:The speaker tonight is David Cross lives locally in Brentwood. He is the son of Derek Cross a photographer who took many photographs and wrote a number of books in the Sixties and Seventies. David now holds his collection. This evening he will show slides of diesels at work on the four BR Regions in England over the 25 years between 1959 and 1984. David says that his Father Derek was unusual in so far as towards the end of steam and after 1968 he actually took pictures of diesels at work. A number of his peers did not bother and David hopes these slides this evening will go some way to filling the gap on early diesels.
