SUMMARY:The Broad Gauge Way Gang - Didcot Railway Centre Saturday 6th June 2026
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what life was like in the mid-Victorian era working on the broad gauge\nGWR? For a unique opportunity at Didcot Railway Centre (DRC). Would you like to experience the\nreality of working for a day on some GWR broad gauge trackwork in a near authentic 1880’s railway\nsetting?\nOn Saturday 6th June 2026 a limited group of RCTS members (under the supervision of Didcot\nRailway Centre staff) will be given the opportunity to carry out some basic light maintenance work\non and around the DRC broad gauge railway line. We will be based for this day in the DRC broad\ngauge P.way cabin\, complete with (weather permitting) coal fired heating and tea brewing facilities.\nStarting at 9:30am\, DRC will provide training for us to try our hand at carrying out a few (not to\nstrenuous) maintenance tasks on their authentic GWR broad gauge track layout. DRC will provide all\nthe tools necessary to undertake the work. As DRC will be open to the public on this date\, it is\nsuggested that suitable 1880’s railway staff clothing should be worn (i.e. heavy work boots\, large\nblack trousers with braces\, white shirt (without collar)\, black jacket\, waistcoat\, and dark flat cap etc).\nA donation of £5 per person will be taken on the to cover the DRC costs for basic materials used (i.e.\nCoal).\nThe 23rd May is 134th anniversary of the removal of the final section of GWR broad gauge\ntrack in the South West of England. DRC may also provide some appropriate provisions (similar to\nthose provided to track workers back in 1892).\nWhile on the site it should be possible to view other projects currently being undertaken\, including\nthe reconstruction of the GWR Heyford station building (originally constructed is 1850).\nFor further details and to book your place for this day\, please contact the Thames Valley Branch\nFixtures Secretary (Andrew Jenkins) by email at tv-fixtures@rcts.org.uk

SUMMARY:TVY - With Lance King in Ulster The Great Northern Line : 1957 – 1965
DESCRIPTION:Leslie McAllister pays a tribute to his late friend Lance King\, with a selection of Lance’s colour photography taken in the North of Ireland in the last years of steam traction. Leslie witnessed much of what is included\, as a schoolboy! \nThe 1960s saw a halving of the Province’s railway mileage\, but not before Lance faithfully recorded train working on the former Great Northern Railway lines. Both the main line from Dublin\, the much-lamented route to Derry (which closed in 1965) and several branches will be covered. Steam hauled both passenger and goods trains and saw extensive use at holiday periods – all faithfully recorded. Even a glimpse of the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway and the County Donegal narrow gauge lines. \nLance did not ignore modern traction\, which appears from time to time during the presentation. A heady mixture of nostalgia at a time of change!

SUMMARY:With Lance King in Ireland 1958-1963
DESCRIPTION:Leslie McAllister offers a first selection of colour photographs taken by the late Lance King in the Republic of Ireland in the last years of steam. Lance was a skilled photographer and left a fine record of steam in the Dublin area and on the fondly remembered branches such as Kenmare\, Loughrea\, Ballaghadereen\, Edenderry\, Tullow\, Clara and Youghal. Steam and diesel in daily service on the Cork Bandon and South Coast Railway feature\, as does the memorable railtour with the last “Bandon tank”. The early days of silver and “black and tan” liveried diesels can be glimpsed along the way. A time of great change.”\nThis talk was first given to the Irish Railway Record Society in 2019\, to whom Lance bequeathed his Irish photographic collection and is one of three talks covering the period from 1957 to 1970\, when steam ended in Northern Ireland.

SUMMARY:East Anglian Railway Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The presentation includes visits to Heritage Railways in East Anglia from 2011 and more frequent trips to the area following the presenters daughter’s move to Norfolk in 2018\, looking at heritage infrastructure on the national railway network and the surprising amount of surviving evidence of the many and varied lines through mainly rural areas many of which closed over 60 years ago.

SUMMARY:The Ivatt LMS 10000 Recreation Project
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society plan to recreate\, and operate 10000. \nIn the first half of this presentation we look at the original twins LMS 10000 and 10001 (the first British mainline diesel electric locomotives)\, and their place in history.   10000 and 10001 were designed by H.G. Ivatt and built by the LMS at their Derby Loco Works in 1947 / 48.  These locos proved many parts and concepts that are still in use on the  railway network today.  However before the  preservation movement had started to take notice of historically important diesel  locomotives\, 10000 was scrapped in 1968. \nIn the second half of this presentation we look at the current project which is planning to recreate 10000.  In recent years this has progressed to the construction of a locomotive chassis in 2022.

SUMMARY:Swindon Works and Railway Sites Walkaround Tour
DESCRIPTION:We plan to have a walkaround tour of the various remaining railway sites in Swindon. The tour will last approximately two hours and will be led by a former Swindon works employee and lifelong Swindon resident Martin Telling. During the walkaround tour we plan to visit the various workshops that still remain in the former works complex (many now converted for other uses)\, as well as a number of other GWR buildings in the vicinity of the railway works site. \nOur Guide Martin Telling started his railway career in September 1973 aged 16 as an Apprentice in the BREL Swindon Works Training School in Dean Street\, Swindon. Martin is proud to say that he is a fifth generation Swindon Railwayman. He served his time inside ‘the wall’ that encompassed Swindon Works\, completing his Apprenticeship in refurbishment of Locomotives and Rolling Stock in May 1977. Following this he then worked as a Technical Officer in the Works Drawing Office\, working on projects including the re-organisation of the Works\, Kent Coast Stock refurbishment\, Gloucester Y25 Bogies\, Plasser & Theurer Cranes\, Gun Boats for Nigeria and a Traversing Turntable for Hong Kong Railways. In 1983 Martin was promoted to the British Rail Western Region CM&EE’s department (still located within the Railway Works) where he worked on a number projects throughout the Western Region\, and following privatisation throughout the UK railway industry. Martin retired from the railway industry after over 45 years service in April 2019. \nLimited spaces available. Email tv-fixtures@rcts.org.uk to book your place. A £5 per person\ndonation (in aid of a local charity) will be taken on the day

SUMMARY:Western Enterprise
DESCRIPTION:Significant investment over recent years has radically changed the face of the Great Western\, a railway so rich in history that parts have been considered worthy of UNESCO World Heritage status. Setting the scene with a brief look at today’s railway\, this talk ranges widely across the route\, blending aspects of the speaker’s fifty-year western connections with musings on the railway’s legend through time. Idiosyncratic\, controversial\, pioneering\, often successful but sometimes also accused of building ‘castles in the air’\, the three letters GWR continue to evoke great passion
