SUMMARY:WFD Branch Meeting - 'A Tale of Two Halves'\, by Richard Morris\, 2nd June 2026 - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:RICHARD MORRIS – Two separate talks tonight\, the first half – ‘Inter-City 125 High Speed Trains’. These iconic trains were launched onto the BR Network in 1976 and could be found across large parts of the country for nearly 50 years. This presentation is an enthusiast’s view of our High-Speed Trains. The second half – ‘Holland and Belgium’. This section will look at visits to Holland and Belgium between 2009 and 2017. We will look at how their railways differ from the UK. One or two trains might look vaguely familiar! \nFurther details will be added nearer the date. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting\, doors open from 18:30 for a 19:00 start\, with a half-time break for refreshments\, and we aim to finish around 21:30. \nUnfortunately\, this meeting had to be cancelled at short notice due to unforseen circumstances – we hope to resurrect this presentation at some time in 2027!

DESCRIPTION:KEITH BLACKSHAW\, who is an Inspector of Rail Accidents\, presents ‘An introduction to the RAIB’ (Rail Accident Investigation Branch). \nKeith has been at RAIB now for 3 years\, after 21 years working on the front line of the rail industry. SUMMARY:WFD Branch Meeting - 'From the Back of the Cupboard'\, by Steve Batty\, 3rd March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Steve Batty heads south again to present ‘From the Back of the Cupboard’\, because it’s made up of B&W shots he has always ignored before when putting a show together\, but which he thinks really deserve a viewing. It also made him wonder why B&W gets ignored so much\, so made the show entirely B&W.  Some are 35mm but most are medium format 6×7. Steam and modern traction both feature in the presentation. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting\, doors open from 18:30 for a 19:00 start\, with a half-time break for refreshments\, and we aim to finish around 21:30.

SUMMARY:WFD Branch Zoom Meeting\, 'The Ramblings of a Railwayman'\, by Geoff Burch\, 6th January 2026
DESCRIPTION:‘The Ramblings of a Railwayman’\, an Illustrated Talk by Geoff Burch. \nDuring ‘The Ramblings of a Railwayman’ Geoff initially talks about his first interest in railways as a train spotter at various locations including London Motive Power Depots. \nFollowing his first visit to a footplate of a steam locomotive and having spoken to the crew\, he knew then that he wanted to become one of these enginemen! \nIn April 1961\, as a 15-year-old straight from school\, he started his career as an engine cleaner\, working in the boilersmith’s shop and eventually became a top-link fireman based at Guildford Motive Power Depot. \nThis gave him a privileged opportunity to work with a diverse group of drivers and steam locomotives ranging from Drummond M7 tanks to Bulleid Pacifics until the final day of steam on the Southern Region when he was fortunate to be a fireman on one of last steam locomotives to leave the depot on Sunday 9th July 1967. \nPlease note this is a Virtual Zoom Meeting. There is no charge for this meeting\, but you will need to register with Zoom – the link is given below – and donations will be gratefully received. These can be made by clicking on the ‘organiser’ given below and are in units of £2.00 – you can donate as many units as you like! \nYou will be able to join the meeting from 18:30\, with the presentation starting at 19:00.

SUMMARY:WFD Branch - Potential Outside Visit\, 23rd September 2025 - Postponed to 29th October 2025 - Now CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Sadly\, this visit has had to be cancelled\, but we may try again at some time during 2026 – watch this space!\n\nA visit has been organised to the Avanti West Coast Training Academy in Crewe for Wednesday 29th October  2025\, from 15:00 to 17:00 hours\, to see the facilities there. As well as the normal training spaces (office based) they also have driver training simulators. Also on site are two of the vehicles from Pendolino set 390 033\, also used for training purposes. The driving power car and a trailer are from the set involved in the dreadful Grayrigg accident in February 2007.\n\nThe Academy is about ten minutes walk from Crewe station\, and car parking may also be available. As far as I’m aware\, there is no charge for the visit\, though some sort of charitable donation may be appropriate. This would be on an individual basis rather than from the branch – as the RCTS is a charity it is unable to donate to another charity unless its aims are similar.\n\nIt is rather a long way to go for just a couple of hours\, but the visit could\, of course\, be combined with an observation session on Crewe station or just a day out by train (unfortunately\, the Crewe Heritage Centre is not open on a Wednesday).\n\nIt will be up to individuals to make their way to Crewe and book any accommodation if required. The visit is open to members of any branch.\n\nThe maximum number of attendees will be ten people and on a first come\, first served basis\, so if you fancy the idea\, please get back to me ASAP! Preferred contact is by email to:\n\ngeoffplumb1949@gmail.com\n\nFurther details will be sent out nearer the day.\n\n\nAddress of the location is: Avanti West Coast Training Academy\nTatton House\, Crewe Business Park\, Westmere Dr\, Crewe CW1 6ZD

SUMMARY:WFD Branch - 'The Forgotten Standard'\, by Ian Crowder\, 7th October 2025
DESCRIPTION:IAN CROWDER – “The Forgotten Standard”. Ian Crowder is Marketing Director of Toddington Standard Locomotive Ltd (TSLL)\, owners of Standard Class 4 2-6-0 No. 76077 and which is nearing the end of its restoration for use on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway.  In this two-part lavishly-illustrated presentation\, he firstly describes the development of the Standard Class 4 2-6-0s and 76077 in particular; its delivery to Sutton Oak (8G) depot and its typical use until withdrawn in December 1967 and subsequent transfer to Barry scrapyard.  The second part explains its rescue by Chris Hinton and long term storage at Toddington\, when the locomotive became almost forgotten.  Acquired by TSLL in 2018\, it has undergone very rapid restoration\, funded thanks to a vigorous marketing campaign\, with a number of technical challenges overcome along the way.  The progress is brought completely up-to-date including the current overhaul of the boiler at Leaky Finders in Devon. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting\, doors open from 18:30 for 19:00 commencement of proceedings.

SUMMARY:WFD Branch - 'Reminiscenses and Thoughts of a Retired Railwayman'\, by John Noorani\, 6th May 2025
DESCRIPTION:JOHN NOORANI – ‘Reminiscenses and Thoughts of a Retired Railwayman’. \nThroughout his schooldays John had been interested in railways\, initially as a trainspotter but then an interest in their history and operation. After leaving school he needed a temporary job for about six months and an opportunity to work on the railway presented itself. The anticipated six months fill-in job became a forty year career which spanned both the nationalised and privatised railway in equal measure. John will talk about various incidents which he was involved in as well as reminisce over some of the ways his career developed and the changes he has seen.  Further details may be available nearer the date. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting\, doors open from 18:30 for 19:00 commencement of proceedings.

SUMMARY:‘Those Were the Years Those Were’ Part 2\, by Michael Reade\, 3rd September 2024
DESCRIPTION:Please note there is no meeting in August! \n‘Those Were the Years Those Were’ Part 2 (With Apologies to Geoff Plumb). \nMichael was able\, during extensive business travel by rail and road in the U.K.\, to capture the rail scene in colour from 1960 to the end of mainline steam in 1968. Opportunities arose during lunchtimes and summer evenings in various industrial locations\, and together with a London Midland Southern Area lineside permit used in various exotic locations such as Bushey\, he photographed many freight workings as well as the dying embers of steam hauled passenger trips. He eschewed the madding crowds in the North West as he preferred to be the last shutter clicker standing. \nPlease note this is a physical meeting to be held at our usual venue at Beechen Grove Baptist Church\, doors open from 18:30.
