DESCRIPTION:Having been an avid spotter in his youth\, when David Allen left school he entered a dormant period. It wasn’t until 1971\, when he took the train to Wrexham and was confronted with things he thought no longer existed\, that his railway interest revived. From then on he was hooked on ‘change’. This later focussed more and more on infrastructure. Steam was still in evidence on his local line\, the Metropolitan and Great Central Joint\, while he also made many visits to the South Western Mainline\, the Isle of Wight\, North Wales\, and other steam strongholds round the country\, including many shed and works visits. Steam specials also feature strongly\, not only various Society (and other) railtours\, but also Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train. DESCRIPTION:The Annual Members Day and AGM will take place at The Grand Station\, Sun Street\, Wolverhampton\, WV10 0BF on Saturday 5th April 2025. We have a wide ranging line up of guest speakers coming to give us presentations: – \nGus Dunster (CEO\, Severn Valley Railway) who will present From Pendolino to Preservation \nSteve Oates (Chairman\, Heritage Railway Association) who will present Heritage Railways in the year of Rail 200 \nMike Lamport (member of the Rail200 Steering Group) who will present Celebrating 200 years of Railways \nPete Waterman\, OBE (Music impresario and renowned railway enthusiast and modeller) will lead a Q&A session at the location where he had his first railway job as a porter on GWR Wolverhampton Low Level Station\, which has now been transformed into The Grand Station venue. \nLunch will be available and must be booked in advance using this link:- \nAGM 2025 lunch \n \nThe AGM itself will commence at 1300hrs – the agenda\, and reports of activities in 2024\,  and accounts for the year ending 31st October 2024 will appear in the supplement to be issued with the April RO. The supplement will also be available on line. \nPLEASE NOTE: – This event is strictly for RCTS and SLS members only. It is not open to the general public.

SUMMARY:Testing and Commissioning the IC225s
DESCRIPTION:Dave Coxon started work for British Railways at the Loco Works in Derby in 1964. During his long career Dave has worked for the LM CM&EE\, the DM&EE and R&DD\, for Serco and latterly for Bombardier in Derby. Dave was part of the Commissioning Section at the RTC Derby who were involved with testing and commissioning the IC225s in 1988-89. \nDave’s talk will cover the delivery of the first 10 locomotives and their testing and mileage gathering. It also covers the trials and tribulations of the late delivery of the Mk4 coaches and DVTs and the need to enter service on the promised date with Mk3 rolling stock and surrogate DVTs. His talk also describes the extensive testing of the Mk4 coach bogies and the transit of a locomotive to Hamburg for an exhibition in June 1988. \n\nFor this virtual event\, you will require a ticket. SUMMARY:That Was The Year That Was - 1973
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Plumb (Watford Branch Chairman) returns to present another of his popular ‘That Was The Year That Was’ series\, this time taking us through 1973 (is that really over half a century ago?). We start the year with East to West cross-border German steam around Bebra in January\, moving on to Austria for snowy scenes on the Erzbergbahn (Iron Mountain Railway) in the depths of winter\, followed by a short visit to the Steyrtalbahn. The Whitby area is the next port of call in April/May\, with the Royal opening of the NYMR. A few shots to mark the centenary of the ‘Marlow Donkey’ are followed by the main event – the World Steam tour to Java plus a bit of Singapore and Malaysia\, in July and August. This tour covered most of the island\, featuring Mallets of various sizes\, steam tram engines\, 0-4-0 and 2-4-0 tender engines and some sugar cane lines – a railway feast! DESCRIPTION:Robin Patrick gives a presentation of his early black & white photography\, from 1959 to 1966\, a period in which he started his railway career at Roade. So 1964 with steam on WCML – the year he would most like to go back to  – features strongly. It is very close to Wolverhampton’s current (LNWR) railway station. If arriving by train\, or tram\, you can walk to Grand Station a number of ways. Most straightforward is probably to turn left out of Wolverhampton LNWR Station\, walk through the car park to Cornhill – turn left and cross under the railway to Bailey Street (take care – the paths under the bridge are a bit narrow!). Bear left onto Bailey Street to ‘The Great Western’ public house – and the entrance to Grand Station should be right in front of you. This route is not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility aids. Parking on site at Grand Station is limited to those who have applied to the Society Chairman for one of six permits. Alternatively\, there are plenty of public car parks nearby. \nA Premier Inn is adjacent. \nWe look forward to welcoming Members and their guests to Wolverhampton.

SUMMARY:A 1968 Jet Search for Steam
DESCRIPTION:The introduction of “Pacesetter” fares for under-26-year-olds in 1968 made international air travel much more affordable\, and Frank Stamford – our regular Australian attendee – took advantage of them to make  a fifteen-week round the world trip in search of steam\, visiting Indonesia\, the British Isles\, Western Europe (from Portugal to West Germany)\, and South Africa\, at a time when such long distance international travel was something exceptional. His presentation will include some industrial railways as well as public railways. And there will be very few diesel locomotives!\n \nFor this virtual event\, you will require a ticket.
