Peterborough and Werrington

Branch member Phil Haines entertained us at the November meeting with four home-produced videos shot in and around his former home town of Peterborough. As well as being a significant station on the East Coast Main Line there are Cross Country services to Leicester and East Midlands Railway services from Norwich and Ely. It is also on an important freight route to Felixstowe.

The first video covered the years 2012 - 2015. This was a period of transition of liveries as the franchise for the East Coast Main Line had changed hands. We were treated to a kaleidoscope of colours of HSTs, Mk 4 stock, Anglia Class 156s, Class 317s, and 321s on passenger workings, whilst freight was in the hands of Class 60s and the inevitable Class 66s operated by EWS, GBRf, and Freightliner.

Werrington Junction, about 3 miles north of Peterborough, was the subject of the second and third videos. Here freight traffic from the joint line to Spalding joins the East Coast Main Line. This caused capacity constraints so a new dive under was constructed. Phil’s videos illustrated the works being carried out and brought to life descriptions in magazines.

The final video of the evening took us to the Nene Valley Railway where a wide variety of locomotives were seen, including the only Deltic of the evening.

Our thanks to Phil for capturing the changing scene at Peterborough and Werrington and illustrating the variety of traffic to be found at these locations.
