Members Photographs
Our December meeting consisted on members’ slides and digital images with contributions from 9 members. Eric Nicholass commenced the evening’s proceedings with a selection of slides of London Underground stock, including some taken in the snow in the 1980s. He was followed by Ian Knight whose presentation consisted of photos of railtours and modern freight workings in the Southampton area and beyond, and trips to the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway and Dublin. John Goodrich’s contribution to the evening was an illustration of a variety of various classes of UK diesel and electric traction using scanned slides dating back to 1967 and more recent digital images. He was followed by Martin Hubbard who showed photos dating from the 1960s when he worked on the railway and was able to obtain cab and brake van trips including on the Woodhead route. Dave Doulton illustrated the railway near his home on the Eastleigh - Romsey line with motive power including 142s on their way to Eastleigh Works, diesel convoys to the Swanage Railway, and steam specials. The final presentation before the break was by Phil Haines who showed a selection of photos of the Midland Mainline in the early 80s and the early days of the HSTs on the Western Region.
Mark Greening showed a selection of slides of steam on the Southern Region dating from the early 1960s. This was followed by David Mead’s portfolio of photos of the Lymington branch taken in the final years of slam door stock. The final presentation by John Godfrey illustrated a variety of locomotives from the 1970s to the early 21st century, including the Tinsley Class 13s and 37890 “The Railway Observer”.
