DESCRIPTION:We will conduct our Branch Annual Business Meeting\, receive reports from the Committee and elect officers to serve for the 2024/5 period. We will endeavour to keep this bit of the meeting short! – because: – \nFollowing this John Dagley-Morris will present Cheltenham St. James to Broadway. This will be a journey along the line which is largely preserved by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. One of many significant structures along the line to Broadway\, 13 arch Stanway Viaduct\, requires some major improvements to ensure its continued well being. The viaduct was constructed in 1905 and is showing its nearly 120 years of age. In 2023 the GWSR Trust launched a £1.5m appeal to raise funds to help pay for the work needed. John has suggested his presentation should be an opportunity to donate funds towards the appeal.

SUMMARY:Great Western\, The Hawksworth Years 1941-1947
DESCRIPTION:Frederick Hawksworth became the last CME for the Great Western Railway\, taking up the reins in 1941. Although he had only a relatively short period ‘in the chair’\, he contributed some fine locomotives to the GWR portfolio. Society President\, Revd Canon Brian Arman\, returns to Cheltenham to bring us this chapter in the history of God’s Wonderful Railway.

SUMMARY:Three Years in the life of the Western Locomotive Association
DESCRIPTION:Unquestionably the very best diesel locomotives ever to grace the railways of Great Britain were the Western Class 52 diesel hydraulics. The Western Locomotive Association is responsible for two of the class which made it to preservation (seven of the original 74 are still alive around the country) and we are delighted to welcome Peter Bamber to come and tell us of the work of the WLA.

DESCRIPTION:Ian presents a fascinating look at the development of the Standard class 4 2-6-0s and 76077 in particular.  The engine spent almost all of its short life allocated to Sutton Oak depot and Ian explores the engine’s time there\, before transferring to Springs Branch when the shed closed.  Six months later in December 1967\, 76077 was withdrawn along with three sisters\, together being the last four members of the class to be withdrawn and moved to Barry scrapyard.  The engine’s remarkable rescue and initial restoration work is covered\, which was followed by 30 years of inactivity when the engine was largely forgotten.  Very rapid progress is now being made in restoration of the engine\, aiming for a 2026 steaming.  Ian’s presentation is richly illustrated with historic pictures as well as bringing the story completely up to date.
