SUMMARY:Signalling Topics
DESCRIPTION:From starting his railway career as a Junior Railman at Chatham in 1974 to becoming the Incident Controller at Croydon in 2008\, Peter Gibbons has gained a wealth of rail operating experience and knowledge throughout the former Central and South Eastern Divisions of BR Southern Region. \nPeter takes us through the evolution of railway signalling in the 1820’s to the present day with an emphasis on its development in Southern England.  The talk is well illustrated with many of the images taken from a privileged position on the ‘inside’.\nMany Southern enthusiasts will know him through his frequent and incisive contributions to the SR Email Group.\n

SUMMARY:Lines to Midhurst\, via Petworth\, Petersfield & Chichester
DESCRIPTION:The major part of the evening will be a presentation entitled “Rails to Midhurst” which is an illustrated talk given by former Assistant County Archivist Bill Gage of West Sussex Record Office. The presentation is not a technical one and can be enjoyed by both railway enthusiasts and those interest in social history .\n\nThe opening of a railway is always a significant event but for Midhurst this was unusual as the residents witnessed three such occasions\, namely September 1864\, October 1866 & July 1881. The sleepy town of Midhurst not only had three railway lines but also two railway stations which resulted in a number of interesting tales. The presentation will include the funeral train to Midhurst of a major national figure\, the runaway engine at Petworth\, Royal Trains at Singelton & Midhurst\, Sir Edward Elgar at Fittleworth\, and bombs and washout on the Chichester- Midhurst line. Film footage of the last train over the Pulborough- Petersfield line will also be shown.\n

SUMMARY:Lance King in Ulster\, 1957-1970\, The NCC in Action
DESCRIPTION:The NCC (“Northern Counties Committee”) was the Irish arm of the LMS (and the MR before that). The talk is mainly 1958 – 1970 when the NCC ran the last mainline steam in these islands. Using the slides of the late Lance King\, I will take you on a trip along the lines still open from Larne Harbour (ship to Scotland) to Belfast\, then from Belfast to Londonderry and Portrush. Along the route\, a few flasbacks to earlier days in Black and White. A short diversion to show NCC locos on the former Great Northern. We finish with an extensive coverage of “The Spoil Trains”: Thousand ton trains of stone worked by a 2-6-4T at each end – lots of lovely action shots. Steam’s Last Challenge”

SUMMARY:The North London Line
DESCRIPTION:“The North London Railway began as little more than an attenuated siding giving the London & Birmingham Railway access to the East End’s docks\, then developed into one of Britain’s busiest steam-operated commuter routes. After the LNWR took over operation it was one of the first to be electrified\, but succumbed to road competition and was closure-listed in Beeching’s ‘Reshaping’ – yet still thrives. The presentation explores the North London’s fluctuating history and includes a photographic journey from Richmond to the former grand terminus at Broad Street.”

SUMMARY:With Lance King in Ulster - The Great Northern Railway Lines: 1957-1965
DESCRIPTION:Leslie McAllister pays a tribute to his late friend Lance King\, with a selection of Lance’s colour photography taken in the North of Ireland in the last years of steam traction. Leslie witnessed much of what is included\, as a schoolboy! \nThe 1960s saw a halving of the Province’s railway mileage\, but not before Lance faithfully recorded train working on the former Great Northern Railway lines. Both the main line from Dublin\, the much-lamented route to Derry (which closed in 1965) and several branches will be covered. Steam hauled both passenger and goods trains and saw extensive use at holiday periods – all faithfully recorded. Even a glimpse of the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway and the County Donegal narrow gauge lines. \nLance did not ignore modern traction\, which appears from time to time during the presentation. A heady mixture of nostalgia at a time of change! \n

SUMMARY:The 1968 Hixon Level Crossing Disaster
DESCRIPTION:In this dreadful accident a huge articulated transporter lorry\, carrying a 120-ton transformer slowly over the automatic level crossing at Hixon\, was hit by a 500-ton express train travelling at about 75mph.  It was truly a dramatic case of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object. \nThe terrific impact not only destroyed the electric locomotive\, killing the three-man crew instantly\, but also wrecked the first five coaches of the train\, causing the death of eight passengers\, and tore up the track and infrastructure for nearly 200 yards. \nThis talk will examine the accident from all perspectives and the changes which followed\, plus an update of recent commemorative events in the village of Hixon and in the railway industry.

SUMMARY:108 Years of Southern Electric
DESCRIPTION:The illustrated talk describes the development of the Southern Electric system from the earliest days when the LSWR electrified the line from Waterloo to Wimbledon via East Putney\, their Riverside Electric route\, using the dc third rail system in 1915; through the LBSCR overhead electrification almost right up to the modern day. \nIncluded is the electrification of the inner and outer suburban area\, and then the first main line electrification to Brighton and Worthing by the Southern Railway in 1933\, continuing with the route through Chichester as part of Portsmouth phase 2 in 1938.     The presentation continues through the Kent Coast electrification and on to the Bournemouth line electrification of 1967\, the Isle of Wight with its successive second hand rolling stock and concludes with more recent developments including Hastings\, East Grinstead and Weymouth\, whilst not forgetting the HS1 route to the Channel tunnel.
