DESCRIPTION:Railways 1952-53 is a presentation of photographs from the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society’s Moseley Archive of over 2000 photographs taken by Percy Moseley between 1911 and the 1970s. This presentation will cover the years 1952 and 1953 – a period when British Railways was getting into its stride as an organisation\, but in many ways it was still the traditional railway\, looking and working much as it had done over the previous half century – and follows on from the previous presentations of photographs covering earlier years. It will be given by Robin Mathams\, the Moseley Collection Archivist.

It wasn’t until 1971\, when he took the train to Wrexham and was confronted with things he thought no longer existed\, that his railway interest revived. From then on he was hooked on ‘change’. DESCRIPTION:Railways Remembered: Lake District and North Lancashire \nThis title is a follow-up to Railways Remembered: North East England and is due for publication in spring 2026. One of the co-authors\, Charles Roberts\, tells how the project came to fruition\, illustrating his talk with a series of maps and images\, most of which didn’t quite make the cut for the finished product. In full colour\, it follows a similar format using Carlisle and the Preston-Blackburn-Burnley axis as its north and south boundary points. Featured heavily are the West Coast Main Line\, with its steep grades\, water troughs and remote scenery\, and the Cumbrian Coast. Long closed branches to places such as Silloth\, Keswick\, Coniston and Lake Side also feature. All facets of railway operations are covered: steam\, diesel and electric; town and country; freight and passenger; BR and industry.

DESCRIPTION:‘The Ramblings of a Railwayman’\, an Illustrated Talk by Geoff Burch. \nDuring ‘The Ramblings of a Railwayman’ Geoff initially talks about his first interest in railways as a train spotter at various locations including London Motive Power Depots. \nFollowing his first visit to a footplate of a steam locomotive and having spoken to the crew\, he knew then that he wanted to become one of these enginemen! \nIn April 1961\, as a 15-year-old straight from school\, he started his career as an engine cleaner\, working in the boilersmith’s shop and eventually became a top-link fireman based at Guildford Motive Power Depot. \nThis gave him a privileged opportunity to work with a diverse group of drivers and steam locomotives ranging from Drummond M7 tanks to Bulleid Pacifics until the final day of steam on the Southern Region when he was fortunate to be a fireman on one of last steam locomotives to leave the depot on Sunday 9th July 1967. \nPlease note this is a Virtual Zoom Meeting. There is no charge for this meeting\, but you will need to register with Zoom – the link is given below – and donations will be gratefully received. DESCRIPTION:Geoff Plumb returns with another presentation of his excellent photography\, this time looking back at 1965. Steam was still in evidence on his local line\, the Metropolitan and Great Central Joint\, while he also made many visits to the South Western Mainline\, the Isle of Wight\, North Wales\, and other steam strongholds round the country\, including many shed and works visits. Steam specials also feature strongly\, not only various Society (and other) railtours\, but also Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train. DESCRIPTION:Peter Robins presents images from his trips to India (and on into Pakistan) in the 1980s. India was always a wonderful but slightly frustrating country that was full of surprises – some good\, some not so. From visits made in 1981 and 1987\, this presentation includes a variety of steam classes at work on both broad and metre gauges\, and on a number of the charming narrow gauge lines\, at various locations\, including Punjab\, Darjeeling and Ootacamund.
