great western electrification

Do any members know what progress ( if any) has been made on the London to Cardiff electrification? Or has it been put on hold till after Brexit?
Here in Newport Gwent, bridges have been raised or demolished and replaced, but no masts have gone up. The Severn Tunnel was electrified a while back, but is not connected to the power. The 2 Hillsborough tunnels in Newport have not been electrified, so the whole thing seems very piecemeal. What about these new trains, if they are going to have to run as diesels most if not all the way from Reading, they will surely not be any improvement over the old HST.
Hopefully some members can throw some light on what is going to happen.

After the (Royal) Wooton Bassett junction, in the area of Brinkworth, some of the small road bridges have been rebuilt to give greater height clearance and steel posts have been installed - but just the posts - and the contractors are no longer present. That was the position on Saturday 17th June when I was in Brinkworth.

As far as I recall, the only areas of phase 1 GW electrification which are presently suspended are the two routes to Bristol Temple Meads (for Network Rail planned engineering reasons according to a report we had at our Branch meeting earlier this year). The rest of the initial phase is still happening as planned albeit not quite as quickly as originally envisaged (that is a story in its own right!). The route via Bristol Parkway to South Wales is still going ahead (NR's project managers have the Welsh Assembly leaning on them fairly heavily). GWT's IEP trains which were originally planned to be electric only - will now have some bi-mode vehicles inserted into them, so they can be used where the 'juice' is yet to be installed. Yes, this does mean they won't be as efficient as originally expected. Someone, no doubt, will manufacture some figures which might give the impression that IEPs in diesel mode will be more fuel efficient than an HST. It is possible, as they will be 'distributed power' - rather than head/tail end power, but I think the jury is out as to whether this really is the case.

Thanks for the information. I have a cousin who lives close to Newport station, and overlooking the line. He has had a letter saying pile driving is going to start for the mast supports, but no masts, as yet. This will take place at night, but he has got used to this as a new bridge over the line was built recently not far from his house. This was due to the original being unfit for raising. The original was built in the 1920's when the line through Newport was widened to 4 tracks.

Cardiff Swansea electrification scrapped.....


MML Electrification Scrapped will not go to Nottingham Derby or Sheffield.

Whatever your political leanings, be fair. Most of the money for these has already been spent doing the early(er) bits of the Great Western. 'The railway' as a whole has blown its chance and the existence of bi-mode stock gives a convenient 'get out of jail' and takes away the incentive to wire any more lines. They are certainly operationally more expensive but cheaper in the short term and do not require NR management to introduce. Overall, I don't think they made the right decision, but the benefits of further electrification will not be seen/measured until way after this government's term. Unless financially supported by OLE manufacturers, any government of any colour would have made the same decision.

Just in case you missed it, in addition to the Cardiff to Swansea and the Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield routes the electrification of the branch from Oxenholme to Windermere has also been axed.
