14 April 2023 ‘East Coast Main Line – King’s Cross to York’ Presented by Stephen Gay.

41 members and guests attended a talk by Steven Gay: Kings Cross to York, The East coast mainline.
Kings Cross in the 70’s still had plenty of Deltics and other Diesels. The first station out of Kings Cross is Stevenage, which was rebuilt in the sixties, further on up the track our next station was Peterborough, Steven showed us several slides of the Great North Hotel which is a most imposing building.
We were treated to a poem about Mallard record breaking journey with Driver Duddington and fireman Bray, both of whom has stylish graves.

We broke for tea and returned for part two, featuring more poems, we were reminded that it has now 60 years since the Beeching report. The route north continued over the Bawtry Viaduct with its speed restriction of 110mph. We pass Doncaster with the station and works, Steven reminisced about Ivo Peters who always trying to include his Bentley in his pictures, to whit Steven followed suit with a white transit van.
All too soon we found our journey ending at York Station.
The meeting gave a round of applause for a most entertaining talk.
