Brian Arman: Tribute to Roger Newman
After a short AGM, Branch Chairman Brian Arman Presented the photographs of Roger Newman. These Photos were from the 1960’s period. We were privileged to have Rogers widow join us.
The Photos started in Sunderland with a Q6, and a 9F at Consett, there were stored engines in the background. We next moved south to Bristol Temple meads and some shots of 1365 the St Philips Marsh shed Pilot. Then to Exeter with pictures of some Bulleid Pacifics.
Roger lived in Birmingham so 6002 at Snow Hill was home ground, a little further north at Tamworth saw celebrity loco Coronation Sir William Stanier, Princess 46207, and DP2 Diesel Prototype. We then moved to South Wales with 1001 in West Wales, Cardiff East dock shed was full of locos including two castles, we also saw the sadder sight of some pictures of newly arrived locos at Barry Scrap Yard.
Roger was a member of the smokebox club who had a trip in the GW Railcar no. 20 to Swindon. The first King, 6004, had just been withdrawn. A move to the midlands saw a shot of 46200 The Princess Royal.
After a brief break for tea we were treated to a 9f, a Jubilee, a Stanier Black 5, and an 8F. Early shots of a Class 33 Diesel on the Bromford Oil tanks ended this segment of the presentation.
We then travelled to the Swiss Rail at Brig, seeing some Crocodiles and early Electric locos, we also saw some steam locos sadly awaiting scrap, and some in better condition in a large shed. We then returned to the UK
Roger was in the Worcester area with shots of Castles, and modified halls, plus a well know Collett 0 – 6 – 0 2222. There were some pictures of 1420 on a local goods at Presteigne, followed by a visit to Dudley and the Old Hill area, all local to Roger.
As the presentation drew to a close we had some shots of the Bristol area, specifically Redland and Pilnining with Diesel Multiple Units class 117 and 122 looking shiny and new!
The evening then ended with pictures from Southampton docks, Bullied Pacific 34066 Spitfire and pictures on the Somerset and Dorset Evercreech junction.
The final shots were of Birmingham new street at the start of the rebuild in 1962

The meeting thanks Brian for showing Rogers wonderful photos with a well earned round of applause.
