Kent’s Bank – a Hidden Gem
Good to see increased numbers again to welcome Dr. Paul Salveson to present Kents Bank a Hidden Gem. He outlined his railway background, Horwich works, management positions in Northern, Arriva and is now the visiting professor at the Universities of Huddersfield and Bolton.
He was attracted to it due to its beautiful location and easy access although it was never officially on the market, he knew the owner and thus achieved his boyhood ambition.
He bought this classic Furness railway station 2 years ago and proceeded to give us a rundown of its history with some amazing pictures from the turn of the century particularly Harry the stationmaster and his niece. At that time the stationmaster was a key member of the local community carrying much prestige. Several shots of steam engines including 70025 Western Star and a class 40 in 1976 were shown. It was a key driver in driving tourists to the area and as part of its development it had direct trains to London and was instrumental in the growth of Kents Bank.
As part of his plan, he wanted to encourage local artists and revived the Beach Hut gallery as a means of promoting quality local art, it was linked to the creation of an artist’s coop in 2007 with a full rescue in April 2004.
His main aim was to make it a must visit spot for railway enthusiasts which he has achieved with some aplomb. There is a vast display of railway memorabilia with several 1000 books, periodicals, magazines, timetables, some very rare. Many are available to purchase but 90% can be loaned.
As part of its attraction, he decided to offer a pop-up buffet and is currently open Friday Saturday and Sunday, in addition lectures are arranged monthly on Wednesdays but as demand is high booking is essential.
He was particularly pleased when they managed to purchase the Kents Bank station name board for £2500, in addition a repro copy of the station lamp was obtained as they continue to recreate the Furness feel. To round this off they now have the station clock (battery operated).
He has recently held special events such as Peter Skellons Bahamas book with further plans such as toilet improvements, more opening days, and the possibility of a café.
This was a wonderful session Paul exuding a warm interesting personality delighting our audience. He deserves a huge accolade for the way he has improved the station and his enthusiasm is outstanding.
