The Life & Times of Edward Thompson – Simon Martin

On 9th September, in the first meeting of the 2025-26 session. Simon Martin described the contribution made by Edward Thompson to the LNER loco design and development following the death of Nugel Gresley.

In a very well researched presentation Simon detailed the political scene within the company with other engineers including A H Peppercorn, O Bullied, R Riddles and W Stanier and the outcome of various committees in selecting Edward Thompson as Chief Mechanical Engineer.
