A 10th Colour Rail Journey

A Presentation by Paul Chancellor.

This evening we were thoroughly entertained by Paul Chancellor, with his “Tenth Colour Rail Journey”. On this journey we looked at photographs of ten different railway photographers, a couple known already to me were Ken Fairey and Roger Siviter, the one surprise in the pack was an American gentleman Emery J. Goulash, this man only came to Britain twice, each time just for a couple of weeks, but Paul has 3500 photographs of his, taken in just that short time here, the rest of his photographs taken elsewhere and not offered to Paul. The pictures we saw this evening were superb, and varied from the standard three-quarter shot of a locomotive due to the camera limitations in the late 1950’s early 60’s, to some fantastic scenic shots taken from high locations looking down on the train, several of these photographers took infrastructure photo’s also, we covered several of the London terminus stations along with Glasgow Central, Manchester Piccadilly and others, showing the scene at the tine with spotters around, the porters trolleys lined up and various book stands from around the country.
Most at sometime had made shed visits therefore we saw locos under repair, the mess laying around on the shed floor and some very artistic shots of locomotives in shed doorways etc. or lit by sunlight penetrating through slots in the roofs. Some shots were real works of art. As we saw in later years as the cameras and lenses improved the photographs also improved. We finished the evening with some of Paul’s own efforts on some of the preserved railway from around the country. The great presentation this evening deserved a much larger audience but the high summer temperatures and humidity, I know makes life difficult for some when having to go out.
