A SELECTION OF IMAGES FROM THE DEREK CROSS COLLECTION

RCTS South Wales presentation, February 10th 2022

David Cross – trains from Euston to Carlisle 1958 to 1965 – a selection of images from the Derek Cross collection.

40 RCTS members joined a live RCTS presentation by David Cross, son of Derek Cross the legendary photographer. David selected some 130 images from Derek's amazing legacy of 35,000 images.

The theme was the route from Euston to Carlisle, from the end of the fifties to 1965 - with short excursions to the Midland Main line, the Lickey, North Wales and Chester and branches off the West Coast.

The photographs were stunning and brought back many memories for members who had made the pilgrimage along the West Coast in steam days, which for some of us culminated in staying at the Carlisle YHA, which was a short walk from Kingmoor shed.

It was also a poignant historical record starting at the end of the fifties with images of an immaculately maintained railway, with a huge variety of well maintained steam locomotives on busy freights and 13 coach passenger trains. Within 5 years a mass extinction has taken place and what was left was a creaking collection of worn out locos struggling to pull trains up inclines like Shap.

Many thanks to David for a marvellous presentation.
