Changing Scene on WCML Southern Section – 1930’s to present day

We had a very good attendance today for Rob Freemans presentation on “The Changing Scene on the WCML Southern Section, 1930’s to the Present Day.” The first half of the presentation was primarily during the steam era, starting with pictures of the original station arch and grand hall at Euston station, followed by a few photographs of the demolition of both in 1963, along with how the station operated during this disruption. The last steam working from Euston was 26th April 1965, although some steam locos did still operate the empty stock movements after that date.

This was followed by shots of many steam workings along the WCML, also visiting the various branches along the route as we worked our way north almost station by station. Photographing locos as we went, the favourites being the Stanier Pacifics, but we covered most Classes on the route, with stops at Camden, Willesden, Watford and Bletchley sheds, not forgetting Bushey troughs also.

Moving on after the break, we reviewed the modern traction on the line starting with all the new electric locos that served this line for many years. We saw many of Rob’s own photographs taken in and around the Berkhamstead area, highlighting other Classes on the WCML on freight, charters, specials and other unusual movements including two RCTS tours among them. Others included were HST’s, Eurostars, various steam charters, special liveried engines including a Class 90 (90026) only outshopped last week in a black livery.

A really good, comprehensive afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present.
