An exploration of the railway network of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire: how and why it developed in the way it did and the impact the railways have had on the region’s landscape, towns (particularly the major rail centres of Cambridge, March and Peterborough), industries and agriculture, as well as motive power and rolling stock.

Until taking early retirement, Tony Kirby was Co-ordinator of Strategic and Curriculum Planning for Anglia Ruskin University, and before that Principal Lecturer in History. He is a past President of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society and Chair of the Cambridge Records Society, and is Secretary of the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History and the County Advisory Group on Archives and Local Studies. Over the past few years he has written a number of commentaries on old Ordnance Survey maps for Alan Godfrey, including Brentwood, Halstead, Romford and Hornchurch, and north Thames-side from West Ham to Tilbury.

For ten years he edited Nieuwsbrief, the journal of the Benelux Railways Society.

His research interests lie in urban historical geography (especially market towns and  seaside resorts) and although a resident of Cambridgeshire for the past 60 years (and slowly started to appreciate a dieselised ‘Swedey’) his first love remains the North Eastern Railway, from his youth in North Yorkshire.
