Images from Glass Plate Negatives – David Postle

RCTS – West Midlands Branch Meeting Report

Monday 16th September 2024 – Coventry

Following a poor turnout for our first meeting of the season we were superbly entertained by David Postle from The Kidderminster Railway Museum. As part of the museum’s extensive photographic collection David has acquired some very rare glass plate negatives from several eminent photographers. These have been very carefully digitised over a long period for future presentations; the results being very worthwhile.

Dates and locations kept members ‘On their Toes’ while certain locos also posed a few questions. He initially concentrated his presentation on the photographers themselves mentioning how difficult it must have been lugging heavy tripods around and having arrived at a particular location they would record passing trains rather than move to another position.

Of the photographers whose work included shown was Jim Jarvis, brother of Ron Jarvis, who is well known for the re-design of the Southern ‘Merchant Navy’ and ‘West Country’ Pacifics as well as the design of the HST Power Car. Jim’s images included views in and around Aberdovey and the adjacent coast as far as Barmouth.

We look forward to seeing Part 2 of this highly recommended talk.
