Network North West

Members from the Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales branch were well entertained by Martyn Hilbert on the subject of Network North West.  Martyn’s knowledge of the railways in the north west is extensive after over 40 years’ experience of photography here.  He covered the area from Barrow down to Liverpool and Chester and many stations in between.

Many of Martyn’s photographs of locomotives and units also captured the surrounding buildings, railway furniture and other background items.

His philosophy is “Photograph it while you can because it won’t be there for ever” and his work was proof of this. Many of the photos covered engines, units and liveries long since gone but not often photographed in their day, and they brought back nostalgic memories.

As with any presentation it is not just about the photographs - the way the information is delivered is just as important. Although the turnout at the event was smaller than usual with only 13 members present, Martyn’s commentary held our attention and we went home glad we had made the effort to come out on a cold windy evening.
