Rhymney Railway

A 51xx tank arriving at Hengoed Low Level with a northbound Rhymney all stations service in 1956

40 RCTS members joined into the excellent Zoom presentation by Peter Fortune. Whilst we do miss our live meetings, Zooming allowed RCTS members from further afield to join us.

Peter’s presentation was tip top (as Ray Gravelle used to say.)  It was meticulous and took us through every nook and cranny of the Rhymney system. As well as some very interesting historical pictures, there were superb images from the 50’s, and 60’s and up to the present day. This suited most of the members who “were there” for most of these decades.

Sadly the age of the coal train is coming to a close in 2022, but the wealth that came out of Rhymney Valley was immense.

Happily, despite a few recent false starts, the Rhymney can now look forward to one of the best suburban rail services in Britain, using Tris-mode FLIRTs with electrification up to Ystrad Mynach and battery power thereafter.

So a fitting historical tribute. Many thanks to Peter and to Jeremy Segrott for organising a faultless Zoom session.

Our next meeting will be on February 9th 2022, “Euston to Carlisle in steam days (1958 – 1961)” with David Cross. We are confident that we can hold a live meeting in Radyr – for the triple jabbed. There will be tea and Kit Kats.
