That was the Year that was – 1962

We were delighted to welcome Geoff Plumb from Watford, on 16th October, with “That was the year that was, 1962” – the first episode in his epic adventure to record the world of railways each year. As a child Geoff was initially not encouraged to join his Father on expeditions to railway installations but, eventually a surprise invitation came to join the group as they headed off somewhere in the country. Geoff was entrusted with a camera and quite impressed the group with the results. So, were we taken on a journey around England, Wales and Scotland, we saw steam from the ‘big four’, and BR Standards, some early diesels, and electrics, out on the main line, in and around depots as well as industrial locomotives in factory settings. Geoff’s Father was great friends with Mr Ivo Peters, of great railway photographic renown. A visit to South Wales in 1962 found a brand new Brush Type 4 on shed. Polite enquiries were made which resulted in Geoff having permission to clamber into the cab and set the headcode panel to 1V0. He then jumped down and persuaded Mr Peters to stand in front of the locomotive. This action met with approval and we saw the resultant photograph. A great evening with all railway interests catered for.
