Trams & Trains on the Isle of Man

A Presentation by Geoff Brockett.

This evening we were thoroughly entertained by Geoff Brockett with another of his colourful presentations about the “Trams and Trains on the Isle of Man”. Both systems are 3 ft gauge, the railway in some areas of the island works primarily with small steam locos and a few diesel workings, whilst other lines are electric. The stock can vary depending on the season and the tourists, the TT races, and other events that may be running at the time causing varying demand. The trams are primarily electric whilst again on special occasions running on horse power, as they did on their opening day in 1876, the trams have had a chequered career running on and off as the company’s fortunes came and went, until everything stabilized when the Department of Transport took control. The railway runs from Douglas to Port Erin, and another line from Douglas to Peel and Knockaloe. The trams run out of Laxey to Douglas and Ramsey, from here you can also get to the Snaefel Mountain Railway. We also saw some pictures of the preserved line to the south of the island which started in 1986 and has developed well since, now having steam sheds, several stations and a coffee shop. Geoff also had shots from the miniature railway in the wildlife park (7½ inch gauge) and from the Great Laxey mines railway. A most enjoyable evening.
