Transport on the Isle of Man

Scottish Branch - Meeting report - 14th January 2023

Our January meeting was “Transport on the Isle of Man”, presented by Ian McInnes, who has visited the Isle of Man on a number of of occasions from 1993 to 2015, and would hope to return before long.

Starting at Douglas, the Steam railway was followed to Port Erin, visiting Port Soderick, Santon, Ballasalla, Ronaldsway, Castletown, Colby, Port St Mary en route. The Douglas horse trams were illustrated, its Station and locomotive shed, containing the steam stock and ex German 0-4-0 Diesel being viewed. A journey on the MER followed. Returning to Laxey a trip on the Snaefell Mountain Railway was seen. The Groudle Glen railway was viewed. Buses are now operated by Isle of Man Transport. Examples of more recent and former service buses were described and illustrated. Jurby Transport Museum featured. A number of Keith Perks archive pictures, including St John’s, the County Donegal railcars and Peel station and harbour area, were shown.

The speaker provided a most interesting and informative commentary, the photographs throughout were of excellent quality.

An enlightening and educational afternoon for our attendees resulted, we thank Ian most sincerely for providing such an excellent presentation.
