Visit to Newcastle

The choice of location was dictated by our need to see as many Tyne & Wear Metro units before their withdrawal.

Our preference was to travel via York but the large difference in price dictated that travel was to be via Carlisle.

The party of six travelled North aboard 390117 on the 07.45 to Glasgow. Alighting at Carlisle we connected into the 09.52 to Newcastle with 156440.

The advice indicated that the best location for T & W units was West Jesmond and 70 minutes there proved very worthwhile. In order to see what was visible at South Gosforth we travelled to the Airport. Units ridden on were 4054, 4071 & 4084.

At Newcastle we travelled aboard 158815 on the 14.33 to Carlisle. From Carlisle the 16.48 to Euston with 390104 took the party back to Warrington Bank Quay. A 39 minute late arrival was caused by a balloon stuck in the catenary south of Lancaster!
