14th June 2021 · On-Line Meeting: The Modern Scene Today, Part 1

Our 2021 Zoom season continued on Monday 14th June with a presentation by Julian Clark from Chichester Branch on “The ‘Modern’ Scene Today, Part 1”. This was a talk given face to face to his home branch in January 2020. His opening shot was of ex-S&D class 7F 2-8-0 no. 53808 piloting a BR standard class 4-6-0 on a photographic charter on the Mid Hants Railway in October 2017. This set the tone for the evening. Julian is a prolific follower and excellent photographer of unusual locomotives and trains on his home ground on the South Coast of England. Early shots featured restored B1 4-6-0 no. 61306 and A4 Pacific no. 60009 Union of South Africa (known to many as “Number Nine”), from its post 1946 LNER number well away from its home ground on this occasion on former Southern territory. Bulleid Pacific no. 35028 Clan Line featured prominently throughout the presentation. Julian moved onto diesel locomotives and multiple units on more currently preserved steam locomotives. He also took us away from his home territory on a visit to Poznan and other sites in Poland featuring some large preserved Polish locomotives.
