“1992” – A tour around the UK with a collection of images bringing back memories from 30 years ago

MEETING REPORT 13th APRIL 2022

Our guest presenter for the April meeting was long-time branch supporter Keith Marshall. Keith had gamely stepped in when the planned speaker became unavailable. The presentation was entitled ‘1992’ (a tour around the UK with a collection of images bringing back memories from 30 years ago).

At the outset Keith explained that he had driven thousands of miles over the years, filming many locations in the country. What a treat was in store therefore for those attending, particularly if a diesel (and occasionally electric) locomotive fan. The slide presentation opened with a Cl. 56 loco at Brocklesby (Lincolnshire) and in the same area a pair of Cl. 37’s on iron ore duty and similarly a Cl. 47 with fuel oil tanks. In a very wide ranging presentation we also saw Cl’s 26, 37, 58, 59, 60 & HST’s. The locations covered included Southport, Agecroft and Long Gannet power stations, Salford, Newbury, Didcot, Andover, Skipton, Brighton, Wellingborough, Shap and Leith, therefore travelling the country far and wide. Many enthusiast specials were seen, in particular a Cl. 08 ‘Gronk’ with passenger coaches in tow! Nottinghamshire collieries were of local interest, including Thoresby, Welbeck, Bilsthorpe and Bevercotes. The slides were interspersed with some fascinating anecdotes of visits made to various signal boxes, and of sometimes being made very welcome, and sometimes not! The presentation ended with a wonderful slide of an illuminated Forth Bridge, taken during the ‘wee small hours’!

All in all an excellent and occasionally breath-taking evening of high quality slides and memories.
