21st September 2021 · On-Line Afternoon Meeting: Scans from Lockdown

Presenter: Colin Miell

Our autumn afternoon gathering at Redhill was replaced, for the second year, by a virtual meeting on Zoom.  On 21st September we welcomed Colin Miell who gave a presentation to 38 participants on “Scans from Lockdown”.  Most of his images which had been thus treated were taken from 1967 onwards, with some b&w ones dating back to 1959. Colin's trayels with his camera have taken him across much of the UK, including Northern Ireland where his father worked in the early 60’s, and to many other parts of the world, including eastern and western Europe, Southern Africa, Jordan and Syria, China, Thailand and North America. He toured India on the late Lawrie Marshall’s first Great Indian Rail Journey in 1970; and several of Colin’s other trips, at home and overseas, have been with the LCGB. The Isle of Man is a particular favourite and Colin returns there regularly. His particular interest was, from an early age, steam railways and this was evident from his selection of images, especially during the last days of steam on BR; but we were also treated to glimpses of non-railway subjects: Southall AEC bus works (west London) just before closure, a Morgan 3 wheeler car, Hovercraft Princess Anne, and others. Colin provided an enthralling afternoon of superb photography with something for everyone.
